Need help with value of S&W M1917 .45 ACP
« on: September 06, 2003, 06:23:24 AM »
I may have a chance in the near future to examine and possibly buy a S&W M1917 revolver in .45 auto.  I was wondering if anybody has a blue book handy and can give me an idea of value based on the various conditions listed in the book.

Thanks, :D

Dutch:  There were 2 versions of the 1917 manu.  first the military version 175,000 mfg. 1917-1919  100% is worth $800 down to 60% at $165 now the comm. version mfg 1920-1941 100% $650 60% $185 add 200% for factory target sights. BTW there was also a comm, manu. model manu from may 14 1946-to july 25 1947 (aprox 991 mfg.) which can be denoted by a (S) prefix in ser. #. :D    JIM

Jim-

Thanks very much for the info!  It will help much when it comes time to talk $$$ with the seller.  I should be able to get a fair deal on this revolver if I get a chance at it.  The seller is a former co-worker who is selling off his father's collection after the old gentleman passed away.  He promised to provide a list of everything that is left over after I bought one of his father's rifles, a Winchester M-71.  Apparently some other relatives may have gotten into the act; and we all know what that means.

Wish me luck, :D

I'm not trying to get in a pissing match here, but my book lists the 1917 at $450 for the commercial model, and $525 for the military model. This value is for a 95% gun.

I'm using the 24th edition of Gun Traders Guide, copyright 2001.
Hey, hold my beer and watch this.
