Help me pick specialty ammo for a 22lr please
« on: March 23, 2009, 08:16:29 AM »
I see a whole lot of new rounds out there. I have only tried the super colibri and the 60 gr sss. I wasn't impressed with the range of the colibri so I got a 22 air rifle. The 60 gr does not stableize in my barrel. I have a sub moa 10-22 with bentz chamber. I use sub sonics for hunting.
Any experience with the new hyper velocity ammo or anything elso out there? I saw that CCI is making a quick shok bullet in subsonic, haven't been able to get my hands on any. Just looking for an update on what you are using and how it has preformed on critters.
Thanks

I have played with all of the 22lr ammo out there.  Everything from the colibri to shot shell to the hyper speed to the target ammo
I also did not like the colibri out of my rifles and they get stuck under the fronf sight of my CZ.  Works great out of a revolver, killed many a mouse and rat with them.
For back yard pest control I went to CB longs, you just need to watch your back ground.  They function better in my bolt rifles.  I even built a rifle just for them.  Call it CDG
Click Ding giggle.
All you hear is the click of the striker, ding of the target, it's louder than the Colibri by far, and everyone who shoots it at steel giggles.
I can get the 60 grain rounds to shoot out of one of my 10/22's as well as my TPH pistol.
But as the gentleman above said what do you want the ammo to do?
I used to hunt with the stingers, thinking that speed kills, and all they did was make a mess of the game and made it so I had to shoot everything in the head.
I found that the 36 or 40 grain standard ammo works really well on everything up to Coyote out to 60 yards.
If you are looking to go past that....
Go to 22Mag/75 yards, 17 HMR /100 yards, or 22Hornet/125yards.  Anything past that I'd go 223 or more.
I am going to try to post pictures of my rimfire guns as well as CDG.

nice collection , what cb aps do you use ?
i have the cci cb long and they do have a report as do the cb short Remingtons .
most small critters if the table is the resting place 22 standard solids . cats ( when we could ) , wild dogs , ground hogs and such HV solids or HP .
never use hyper vel in a hand gun seems a waste .
crows and such hyper hp . as far as brand what ever shoots well in the gun .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

CCI Longs.
I did keet the shorts as well but found it easier to keep just the longs as they work in all of the bolt rifles.  NONe work in the 10/22's
Thanks for the compliment on how wackey I have gone with the rimfire rifles.

I shoot a mix of things. The sub sonics are usually for everything smaller than a rabbit. I have been using the 60gr on opossum, raccoon and fox snooping around the chicken house. The bullets generally are off a bit and key holed, so body shots only. I live on a little farm. My 5mm rimfire barrel is dead. Trying to use the 22lr to hold me over until a new rifle is made in 5mm.
There are feral cats from time to time. I have no neighbors nearby so sound is not a concern in that respect. I am just too cheap for match ammo and the subs proved to be a price conscious compromise.
Basically what I'm trying to do is make the lr fit in the role so I don't have to drop money on a 22 mag then later get another 5mm. So let's just say all small critters that are edible and the ones that eat the edibles.
I used to shoot a pmc sub that had a hard hp bullet and would penetrate deep for the little predators. I haven't seen any lately. That's why I'm using the 60 gr. I have never tried a standard or hv round.
Thanks

I tried some of the Quick Shok a few years ago & they really killed milk jugs, but I shot a ferral cat in my barn at point blank range & it took 3 shots. They blew up on head shot. Got one in the boiler room and it stopped him dead. I keep my 10/22 loaded with Volicitors. They seem to work well. I just have to keep the kid from use them up blowing up over ripe fruit & veggies.
I would love to hear more about the Giggle Gun. Sounds like more fun than an an Air gun.

It is a blast.
The neat thing about the CB's is with a flick of the wrist it reloads.  They are quieter than my 177 pellet gun and are more fun.
Nothing special about the gun other than it's quicktodo's fault.  When they were starting the pay it forward site  had the 2X pistol scope and was trying to give it away and he would not let me as it was not an official yet and I was playing with it and jokeingly stuck it on the folded rear sight of one of the 10/22's and an idea was born.
I desided that any beat up tube fed bolt action would work and then the latest em catalog came out and I liked the looks of the green and black.
I need to work on my painting skills.

I've got an old Savage Single Shot that shoot the Colibri pretty well. The only sound is the firing pin hitting the rim. My old Duramatic shoots them pretty well to, but a tad more noise. Got to get some of the CB longs to try. The Colibri are a little more powerful than my Crossman at 10 pumps.

The longer the barrel the quieter the CB's are abd the yare more accurate and powerfull over a longer range.
