357 Puma w/Octagon barrel.
« on: March 21, 2009, 11:27:09 AM »
Just back from the range from trying the new front sight on my 92 with the 24" barrel.  The original sight had me shooting way high and that was with the elevator removed from the back sight.  Put a Lyman front blade from one of my muzzleloaders on her and it works perfectly.  Put 100 rounds through it today and she's starting to smooth up nicely.  Had only put a box of rounds through it before, was not liking the high impact so she had to set till I changed the sight.  With the long, heavy barrel she hangs on a target off hand real nice.  Also took the cresent butt stock off and replaced it with a regular one from my 44 mag puma.  That one got a butt stock with recoil pad like the one my 454 wears.  All 3 of these guns shoot better than I do and handle like a dream.  I think the 357 is gonna go deer hunting this year.  The other 2 have had their fun with muleys, so her turn.  DP

I have the EMF Hartford model with the 24" oct barrel, close to what yours is except 45 cal and I think different sights.  Mine came with a brass bead on the front, semi buckhorn rear, and with my loads it shoots pretty close to dead on at 100 meters with the rear sight all the way down in the last notch. So I left it alone, although I do need to use a six o clock hold at 50 meters, I don't mind that,  I know where it shoots.  I also am not real fond of the cresent butt, it looks neat, but does not feel as good nor comes up as fast with a coat on as a shotgun style butt.  But I have fallen in love with that thick heavy oct barrel for some reason.  Like you said, it hangs there real nice off hand.  Would love to have a 357 short rifle with the heavy oct barrel to go with it.

dpe.ahoy,  is yours a Rossi?  They usually shoot to the factory sights.  If you look close you'll see I have changed all my rear sights to full buckhorns, just works best for me.  The top 4 are .357, the bottom one is .45 Colt.  The top 3 are my SASS rifles but they are all great packing guns.  I especially like the small 1/2 mag. one for packing around.  Your gonna love yours.  That blue one near the top has had about 50,000 rnds. thru it in the last 20 yrs. just as accurate as it was new and a lot smoother.

I bought a .357 24" Octagonal barrel Rossi a few months back and mine shot 6" high at 50 yards as well with the factory brass bead and semi buckhorns . I ended up fitting a Skinner front blade and dovetail mounted peep . The rifle has smoothed out beautifully and seems to be shooting more accurately now than when it was for the first few hundred rounds .

Going pig and goat hunting for the first time with it in a few weeks , the little .357 should do an admirable job . I am considering getting a weaver rail scout mounted on it so I can fit a Artic Fox Electrodot sight I am trying out on my Browning BL22 - intrigued with these little pieces of technology  We will see !

Yep, all 3 are Rossi's.  Pretty happy with all of them now.  Ordered a stock when the butt stock split on my 44 while out deer hunting.  Dropped a nice whitetail buck and got back in the tree as there was still 45 min of hunting time left.  A yearling came out and sniffed the blood, I shot and the poor thing took off with a broken rear leg ???.  At 60 yd, I don't miss that bad, looked down at the rifle and see the butt stock is at a 10-15 degree angle to the receiver. :o  Musta started to split on the first shot and let go on the second.  Had to look for the poor thing for over 3 hours, the bullet had also creased the skin on the belly and after running over 100 yards, the crease started to open.  Finally did get a blood trail after making circles where I last saw it enter the deep woods and found it.  Hope I never have another hit like that again, I'll pass a shot if not sure.  DP

Dpe, The Oct. barreled .357 at the top of the pic has a 94 butt stock with great figure that i got from Numrich gun parts for $16 or the 92 stock can be epoxied back together if you have all the pieces.

Got it fixed by a friend of mine that is a true craftsman with wood, some of his stuff is unbelievable.  He is one of the old style cabinet makers and is a real artist, so I have faith in it staying together.  AND, he didn't charge me a thing. ;D  DP
