H&R price question
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:39:18 AM »
I have a question that may be on the stupid side, but it's buggin' me. While looking at the classifieds on GB I noticed a lot of Handis for sale with prices higher than I can pay a new Handi here. I also noticed this on Gunbroker.com. Does the price of Handis vary that much from 1 area to another? I was checking with my dealer yesterday & he can get a 44 mag out the door $225. That's with 9% sales tax. Last September I bought my 444 with a sling & a box of Leverevolution for $242 from the same guy. I'm curious to what is the going price for Handis in other areas. Is my dealer giving me a good deal or the prices just lower here.
I'm located 40 miles from "nowhere" in west Louisiana.

Can't say on all Handi's but if you got a 444 for less than 3 you did very good. They are much higher here in Mississippi.

The 44mag and 357mag come on an SB1 shotgun frames which cost less than an SB2 rifle, so that's not a good comparison. Just depends on what model you're looking at and what the chambering is, for instance the 35 Whelen in the classifieds is no longer made, same for the 7.62x39, those and other discontinued chamberings sell for more, sometimes lots more than a new current production rifle. That's not counting the price increases that have occurred over the last year, I bought a new SS 45-70 Ultra Hunter last summer from Bud's for $382 shipped, it's now well over $400 plus shipping.  Sportsman's Warehouse has several Handis/Ultras in stock here, a couple of their Handis were $199.99 a month ago, now they're $219.99-$239.99, so it also depends on where you're buying them, you can look online at RR, Bud's and TGS to get an idea of what the current retail prices for a new one runs.

229 to 239 for a handi, 289 for an ultra, BCs and SS hunters are hovering close to 400. 8)

That sounds like they're pulling the same tactics that Circuit City used: jack up prices right before announcing that stores are going to be closing and then tell people they're getting a discount (5% for this weekend at the two SW stores near me).

Paul,

If you don't mind me asking, where is the dealer?  In the market for a .444 Handi and so far the best price I've gotten in Baton Rouge is $265.  I'm in Lake Charles pretty often so if he's close to there I could swing by.

Plain ol' Handis sell from $269 + sales tax to $300 + sales tax around here depending on what cartridge they come in. The 44 mag, and 500 S&W sell for the most because they are considered deer cartridges in our state. A .223, 308 etc will sell at the lower price. The $300 price tag gets it into about the same price a Stevens 200 sells for and more than a Remington 770. ???

The stock and barrel prices are really high here lately.  I've been looking but I can't give over $100.00 for a stock set.

The SW here in Aurora that is closing and being run by liquidators had Handi's at $189 with the 15%; Tuesday they were $199 with a 20% discount.  They have .243, .270, .45-70, .204, and .223.  None of them interest me or I already have one.  Wish they would come up with a .308, 06, or of course a "lost" Whelen.  I figure by the time they get to 30% they will be on sale for $229.  Liquidators are among the biggest crooks around.

Buy one, and sell or swap the barrel to get a caliber you want.  The .45-70 barrels are the easiest to sell, because they are the best Handi caliber.

What makes a H&R cost double what a Rossi costs?  Larry

American made quality, better looking, interchangable barrels with little or no work.
