Single Action .22
« on: March 16, 2009, 05:12:56 AM »
I once owned a single six  but sold it to buy somthing else. Can 't recall what from this time and distence.
Now  Its time to find another single action 22 . Should be steel with  ajustable sights. I will probally get a nother single six but wondering what else is out there? Who else makes a good single action 22 besides ruger?

Offhand I can't think of any.  EAA imports one, but I don't think they make an adj sight version.  Never seen one so can't comment on their quality.  Heritage SA's have adj sight versions, but I have shot one and was not at all impressed - looked and felt kind of "rough".  If you've owned a Ruger SA I doubt you'd be happy happy with either of the others.  Just my opinion.

Other "good" single action-USFA.  They are about $750, but one small problem-no adjustable sights.  Looks like that leaves Ruger.

I may very well end up with a single six. I didn't want to pay for the extra mag cylinder which I probally wont use. But it may still be the best value around. I used to use my single six for small game with the
mag cyinder and it would bring things to a conclusion real quick with any decent hit on rabbits and squirrels. I kinda liked that part of the mag just not the price of the ammo compared to .22 lr.

I have a couple things on my wish list. We'll see what I run into first.  I just love how cheap .22 lr ammo is.
Also how quite it is. at least out of a rifle.  I reccon I would have to say  what, huh , didn't hear ya
a whole lot less if I wouldaa got into 22's instead of centerfires all those years ago.

The 22 has become one of my very favorite rounds.

It doesn't exactly whisper out of a Single Six.  Short of an air gun I know of none that you should be shooting much without hearing protection.

i have the sigle action six revolver by eaa.. it fine gun.. im wondering if i might have the magnum cylinder its real thick but will take an 22 lr.. the 22 mag has pretty much the same specs i think.. so whats the difference.. both cylinders would of a necessity handle a long rifle length rnd.. i know this gun comes with both cylinders originally ..
don t won t to do something foolish ..so how can i tell if my cylinder is magn ,, or not.. an if not how can i get the magnum..thanks slim

If you are shooting LR's in a Mag cylinder the cases would be splitting. The bullets are the same diameter but the cases are not. Mag cylinders have just a bit larger chambers. That is is the reason the guns need two cylinders to shoot both rounds.

You could always get a Freedom Arms 22...... ;D They are single action and VERY high quality. (Lots of $$$ too)

Slim..... 22 rfs have a heel type bullet (the heel of the bullet that fits in the case is smaller than the rest of bullet diameter) while the 22 mag bullet is seated in the case at full diameter. Not interchangable.
Just another worthless opinion!!

The Ruger Single-Six can't be beaten in a single action revolver, unless a person wants to spend $14-1500 on a FA Mdl. 97, and then frankly, few people can shoot well enough to achieve the accuracy difference in field shooting.

I have the EAA single action also and I love it.  It does not have adjustable sights and I needed to file a little off the top of the front sight to bring it up.  It now shoots to POA at 40 yds with the .22 lr and the .22 Mag both.  A fine gun and very accurate.  It is heavy however as it is a full sized gun with little .22 sized holes in it.  I really enjoy mine and I'm sure you would too.  But for the easiest way to go, get the Single Six.  You will not be disappointed and it's a little smaller and handier.  44 Man

If you want a single action, I recommend the Ruger Single Six although I no longer own one. I like single actions for more powerful calibers. When shoot a .22, I shoot a lot more ammo and don't like to poke those empties out of those little holes. I prefer the K22, 617, M41 and Ruger auto, but we all shoot what we like.

sorry about the lousy pics..the bottom gun is my single six,you change out the trigger, hammer, grip frame and grips, and the two top screws on the grip frame...all factory ruger parts and they dropped right in for me...if you can dissassemble your ruger sixgun and get it back together you have the ability to do this conversion. BTW the cheapest way to do this is buy a Bisley Vaquero, switch the parts to your gun, then sell the standard "Vaquero" that you have left...to do it this way you need a small frame bisley hammer(single six takes a small frame hammer, the large frame hammer that comes with the Bizzer Vaquero fits a NMBH)......pretty good DIY project

I have at least 10 Ruger Single Sixes...  Maybe 20 if you count the 17s, 32s and the one 38 Special...
BUT......If you want the best,  Freedom Arms offers their model 97 and 83 in 22LR.

Thanks for  all the posts. I am going to look at a heritage arms rough rider and either go cheap or decide to spend the money and get the ruger  single six.

Think I would look for a good deal on a used Single Six before settling for the Rough Rider, but that's just me.

I  looked twice at both the single six and the heritage.  The heritage was about $200.00 less
and I liked the high viz sights. I decieded to take a chance and bought the 6.5 inch blue or maybe its
  matt  rough rider.

I sighted it in today and put about 80 rds of fed value pack threw it.  It worked flawlessly. Was more accurate then I will ever be. Trigger not great but not too bad for out of the box.

Tomorrow I will put some rds over the crony. I think it may be  a keeper.

I shot again today. This time with crony in tow. The gun shot great with 22 lr fed value pack.
I didnt shoot enough  22 mag to test accuracy.

For what its worth the velocity was as follows.

heritage rough rider  6.5 inch barrel

fed value park 36 grain copper plated  hollow point  22 LR 5 shot averge was 1014 fps.

Winchester  .22 magnun 40 grain jacketed hollow point   5 shot averge 1253  fps.

The stopping  power of the 22 mag on  varmints ect   would be beter at an xtra 239 fps averge.
But the cost $$$$  for that xtra power is a bunch !  50 rounds 22 mag for $8.97   vs  550 rds LR  for $13.97 ........Yikes !!!!!!

Happy trails !!

After putting perhaps 150 rds threw my rough rider in two days I have come to the  conclusion
that  one  single action 22 is not enough.  This is too much fun !!

Another vote for the single 6.  I got a great deal on a used one, because it had a scope on it and nobody bid on it, when it came, it had the mag cylinder too and he didn't even mention that.  I had already bought a set of open sights at a gun show before it came, but after trying it with the scope, a Tasco 2X, I've decided to keep it on for now.  I used the mag cylinder and it was shooting to sight at 50yd and about 1" low at 100yd, so I aimed at the 200yd gong and held to the top of the gong and was able to get a clunk and slight swing.  A guy shooting an AK47 was as impressed as I was, so I stopped as I'm pretty sure I couldn't repeat that shot if I tried.  I told him I'm sure the scope is sighted in for prarie dogs now, so I'll save it for my trip to South Dakota.

I just got my second Single Six, stainless with new fancy gun belt and holster used from a pawn shop.  Only had the 22 mag cylinder, have to keep my eye out for a 22 LR cylinder.  Tired of every 22 auto I have jamming (except my Ruger).  DP
