Playing with a 14 inch 22 rimfire barrel
« on: March 15, 2009, 06:28:32 AM »
I recently got a stainless 14 inch barrel in 22 rimfire planning to use it in the fun match on silhouettes.  Well it's going to take a bit of getting used to as it's pretty heavy with the 31/2x10 power Mueller Extreme scope on it. However this gun shoots extremely well!  From the bench of course I am getting small ragged hole 5 shot groups at 50 yards using Federal 510 and some Winchester bulk ammo. I am using a modified rifle forearm on this barrel which works out well.  I will definitly have to do some strength training to hold this one steady thru the 60 shot match!

I don't compete, but I must say that my 14" 22 rimfire with a Simmons 2.5-10x50mm rifle scope on it is about as much fun as I've had with any of my Contender's chamberings.  I'm always on a bench of some sort though, so the weight isn't an issue.  I recently added a 10" octagon 22 to the stable for the off hand stuff.  Good luck with your matches.

I also have a 10 inch octagonal barrel in 22 rimfire. I have shot it a lot at small game and my eyes still see well enough for that use.  It seems my barrel only has two screw holes in it and I don't know if they are spaced correctly to use a scope mount.  It could be that I might shoot better with the lighter barrel.  I have to admit the 22 rimfires are a lot of fun to shoot.

I have the 15" Bullberry target .22lr barrel.  It is HEAVY.  I cannot hold it in a 40 round match.  I was using my 10" barrel for unlimited because the 15" 22 was SO heavy.  I have been playing with Savage Strikers, Ruger Challenger, and Anschutz 64P.  Still getting so-so scores with high 30s being my best.    I was thinking of putting highrise on the 15" barrel and trying it standing.  Maybe that will work.....or maybe it will just give me nicer looking biceps!!   ???

Good shooting!!

Steve :)

Are you limited to how you can hold the pistol in the match?
My club used to put on team bowling pin shoots.  One of the side matches was a three man 22 team.  One handgun and two rifles.
I built a Browning Buck mark Silohuette and mounted a scout scope on it.  I would lay the fore end over my elbow and grab my shooting arm. Everyone called it my short rifle.  I did shoot it in the bullseye shoot that way a couple of times and was shooting 1150 out of 1200 and not taking my time.  They later outlawed my gun with the scope for the match. I also was shooting it in the rifle match and was holding my own there.
Just a thought.

With the 14" barrel you ought to learn the Creedmore position for the match.  It will be legal, and is every bit as precise as shooting off a bench.   I've even used it for predator hunting when a coyote holds up 3-400 yards out.

My 12" Bullberry 22LR Match I shot a lot of sihouettes and small gane with.

How do you like the rifle scopes on your tenders. Been thinking installing one on my 14" 22 Match, but afraid I will never get used to it. Any tips?????

Thanks

I have several rifle scopes, you get used to both arms bent and the exact distance from your eyes really quick.  I just put my left hand over the scope bell and pull the pistol up in front of me.  It works for 22 Hornet, 32-20, and 30 carbine too. The 22 Hornet is the easiest to use, 8/10ths of a pound recoil.  I have a 22lr match barrel with Weaver V-16 atop. I love it for not wasting my lead supply.

I shoot a pistol scope on 7mmTCU, a Burris 3-12. Never have mistaken one for the other, have open sights too.

How many eyes do you have  ;)
you mention pistol on 7tcu  I have a Question
I love the 7tcu but lately having a world of trouble with my eyes and Pistol scopes
I have thought of the Ken Lite(spl.ck) mounts to see if I could get a Long eye relief Rifle scope to work
have you ever tried a rifle scope on your 7t with the "Style form hold" you use ? ? ?

:)  Here you go, gloss black 3-12 power. It will focus out to 300 yards but, it is a little picky about eye relief.  I shoot it two-handed, not the way the picture shows. The recoil on the 7mmTCU is a bit much for me, I haven't been shooting it that long. I'm still working with it.
I have had that Weaver V16 get way to sensitive, you always have to turn the magnification down.  Best thing I've found to do is to spend enough time focusing the ocular lens-the one in back that presets the scope for your eyes. I wear bifocals too.

Direct Answer to your question: No, anything above a 30 Carbine or 270 Ren has too much recoil to hold that close to your face.  When a 30 Carbine comes back and taps your glasses or cap, you know it's close.  The 32-20 is slower (1300 fps) and doesn't have the recoil.  A 7mmTCU is an unlimited class cartridge, the others are limited. Unlimited is shot to 250 yards and Limited is shot to 100 yards. The Style hold is 100 meter NRA Hunter's Pistol Limited. It's great in 22 Hornet and 32-20.

I have a BSA contender 6x24 x 40 silver that looks like that 36 weaver think I will put it on my super 14 223 and see how it shoots. It has a 25 50 100 150 adj on front so that should be fun to play around with and with 69 grain bullets I can use it for deer in oklahoma.

A "Match Chamber" is cut to minimal dimensions, and will not accept certain 22lr ammo ie, Stingers and others that use a slightly longer case. Also my MGM's and Bullberry barrels with the match chambers engrave the bullet nose with the rifling when seated in the chamber, whereas my T/C manufactured barrels will accept ALL 22lr ammo and seem to be a longer chamber and the rounds are a little loose in the chamber but still within manufacturing tolerances.

Both my TC "Match" chambered barrels engrave the bullet as the action is closed.  TC has made lots of non match chambered barrels also.

Ditto that... TC's LR barrels do not but LRM barrels do engrave the bullet same as all custom LR and LRM barrels do.

To each his own, but I wouldn't be caught dead with a rifle scope on a pistol barrel, not even on a rimfire barrel.   Just personal choice.
