Dove Count..........

Ok fellow dove hunters, how is the hunting going?  How many have you taken and how many shots did it take to get them?  My count so far is;

1.]  3 days - a limit each day(10)

2.]  number of shots used - Sept. 1, 20 .410 shells - Sept. 2, 21 .410 shells - Sept. 3, 18 .410 shells

About two shots per bird is much better than my normal 3.5.  Lots of birds and lots of shooting all around us.  The ammo companies are doing quite well this year.  Lawdog.

I went to a dove shoot Monday with the idea of getting pictures for my web site.  They shot about 47 times and killed maybe 6 birds.  It was kinda embarrassing to say the least.  I will say this though, the birds just weren't flying much.  They'd go about 20 to 30 minutes between birds and when they did fly they were entirely too high to hit with a shot gun.  The semiauto guns weren't helping that bunch's average either.  That's why I'm having to bum dove pictures from somewhere else.   :-D

BTW:  I was just taking pictures.  Wasn't hunting myself, and the wild boar shoulder they had after the hunt was good.

Opens in south Louisiana Saturday at noon.  Having the usual BBQ, then off to the field.  Hope to have a good report Sunday.

Well after two nights that got pretty cool and a little rain those fair weather birds must have headed south.  Only seen five birds this morning and only two came within range.  Both came home after three shots total.  If things don't pick up with dove I'll have to get ready to do some quail hunting instead.  Lawdog

A buddy and I hunted some state ground for dove this year. They insist on us  using steel shot (first problem was finding steel in small shot size). We had good stands on both days, buckled several but didn't knock any down. On the first day we could see feather burst off the birds but they seemed to recover and fly on. I went to tighter choke on the second day (modified). but didn't do any better. Anyone else have the same experience?

Before the cold snap hit here in Ut, me and my retriever Kimba managed to take 67 birds- mostly jump shooting.  Limeted 6 times and only got 7 the last day.  It was great fun.  I managed to get 3 doubles in the mix, and had a nice kill percentage using my 12 ga nova with full choke and your basic 7 1/2 field load winchester 2 3/4".  I love the nova, but really hope to have a 20ga by next season as jump shooting with a 12ga on dove is not as hard as I expected it to be.  I let my friend talk me out of a 20 and into a 12 as it is more versitile and I do intendt to hunt ducks in a few weeks.  As it turns out, I think I would be more happy with a 20 on doves and sacrifice a little distance in the duck hunting, but I will let you know how the ducks go in a bit.
