the 3 barrel challenge

Hi
Looking to compile a 3 barrel battery to cover most of my hunting needs and are looking for help.
I am looking for a short range, under 100 yards, pig and deer size game, a 100-150 yard deer sized game, and a 150-200+ yard varmit round.

Here is the callenge: On must be a 10" barrel and I will allow 1 custom chambering for I am not a reloader ( yet).

So far I have come up with a 10" 357 max, a 14" 30-30, and a 14" .223. So far how am I doing? any other suggestions? Any help would be great!!

Looks good from here but would ask you to think on the 7-30 waters, a little more speed and less recoil than 30-30 but ammo is more expensive. You may also look at your state regs. as they may or may not allow certain cal. In Oklahoma we can use the 223 on deer but bullet weight has to be 60 grains or more.

I have that set, except I have all 3 in 14".  The 30-30 is the most versatile of the 3 as bullets are available everywhere; even Murdo South Dakota.  The Max is strictly a reloading round as ammo when available is very expensive.  The 223 is pretty universal and is cheap enough in bulk to not reload except for special purposes.  My 223 in 14" has taken prairie dogs out to 150+ yds.  I've taken deer with both the 30-30 and the 357max out to 150 yds. also.

Another vote for the 7-30 Waters and you could us it for all 3 of your needs unless you really need a 10" barrel.
And yes the 223 is a good choice for varmit

10" 44 Mag for pig and deer at < 100 although your choice of the "max" is a good one too.

Another vote for 14" 7-30 Waters for longer range (could double on varmint with 100 gr bullets).  Mine is so accurate it's scary!

I can't better your choice of a 14" 223 for varmints.

One choice that I forgot to mention and that is the 222 Remington. I have one in a 10 inch barrel and the writer for gun digest says that the 222 will out preform the 223 but again the ammo is a little more expensive but not much. I have both and like both. are you comfused yet :) :) :) to many to choose from.
The 223 is a good choice one reason being the cost factor on ammo the problem that I find in that cal is most comes in 55 grn I had to look hard to find some 60 and 70 grn.
Question what gun are you going to use this in ,if encore then there are a lot more choices. :) :) :)

Don't think there is anything that would be any "better" than what you have picked.  The max is good.  I personally would get a .44 but that's just me.  The max will more than suffice.  The .30-30 will work well too.  I think in .30 cal I'd probably get a .309 JDJ but really, the .30-30 will do what you want to do with it.  Ammo is easily available for it too.  Can't get .309 JDJ at the local wally-world.  The .223 is a great round.  You could supplant with .222 but why?  May look into a 6mm or 6.5 for better wind-bucking but again, why?  It's a matter of very incremental gains.  It's not like you'd get an order of magnitude better performance or anything like that...  Now you'll NEED a .22 and probably a .17.  You will also HAVE to have a thumper for elk and moose... better get a .45-70.  You'll need a black powder for late season hunts... 

and that's how it starts...

Yep agreed 2 barrels is enough 3 is good as is 33  ;D
a 12 to 14 " 7-30 waters and a 14 222
then you should aways have a 22 so there is the third if you want
I'd get a 10" 22

MCWT247,  You nailed it, You could do it several other ways but none would be any better.
Keep in mind too that 38s and .357s can be shot in the Max and both are super accurate in my 10" Max. Only change I'd make is a 16+" for the .223 and maybe the 30-30 too. JMHO

I have as my three
10"  45 Colt/410 (carry as well as small game.)  Hunt Big game with the 45 Colt (deer and pig) and shoot small game with the 410 shot shells
14"  30-30 (open sights for 100 yards or less big game) 
14"  223 ( Scoped for Varmints and Preditors)
I also have a 14" 44mag barrel and a 16.25 223 carbine kit.
Some how I wish you allowed 4 barrels as I would toss in a 10 or 12" 22LR as well.

gotta have a .410 barrel for sure

and a ML barrel too

and make dang sure you have a .22lr for practice

your 3 barrel challenge is not possible!  ;D

Yea, yea, yea.....that what I said....about 40 barrels ago.  Every now and then I decide to get rid of a few.  So I'll sell about 5....then with the extra cash in my pocket I go get 10 to take the place of the 5 I'm missin'. ??? ??? ???

One man I know has hundreds of contender barrels and still does not have enough and if you have one to get rid of he will buy it. We know him as Ed's contenders :) :) :) :) :) Have to have a little fun in this depressed economy. Has any of you got your 13.00 dollars yet? Fellows I think we have got off the subject.
What about 22wmg 22hornet and 7-30 waters.

Yes Sir.If you own a contender you need to reload.
I can think of three... 6mm tcu for varmints(I know.. but they're varmints) 7mm tcu for deer under 100 yrds
and 6.5jdj for  200 yrds plus..But you don't reload   :'(

OK, I agree back on subject.  3 barrels.....oh my....well....i've GOT to have my .22lr....and at least one of my 45-70's.  that anchors the low and top end but with the gap left in the middle the other barrel choice has got to be good.  Lot's would say the 7-30 or 30/30 and they wouldn't be bad, but I'm leaning hard toward one of my two high performance SSK barrels...6.5JDJ or .309JDJ.  Both are quite versatile and wickedly accurate.  Of course both are reloading musts....no problem.  For big game hunting only, the heavier bullets of the .309 would be nice...but we've got the 45-70 for the really big stuff.  The 6.5 with 85gr'ers is really an outstanding varmit choice and I use it more for deer than I do the .309...yep that's it the 6.5JDJ.
   So that's .22lr, 6.5JDJ, and 45-70.    Now....ya'll read this quick so's I can delete it for tha Boss see's it!!!!   GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt :D

My three barrel combination works out to 22 rimfire, 223, and 35 Remington all 14 inches long.  However I am not saying I have only three barrels.

My choice if limited to 3:

.223
7-30
44 Rem Mag or 45 Win Mag

But then I think:

I have heard nice things about the .357 Max
The thurdy-thurdy is available and dependable
I can't give up the .204
The 25-35 would be a neat, light round

etc etc ......

Three chamberings can satisfy all your needs.
50 chamberings would not satisfy all your wants.

I have to side with Alaska Dave on this.

10" 22lr
14" .223
14" 7-30 w or 30-30  either will work.

With 30-30, you can get less expensive ammo.  All are over the counter.
All are good starts.

    My three started out, 22 Hornet, 32-20WCF, and 7mmTCU. But these arent' hunting calibers, I shoot silhouette. Now, I'm working up a 9mm hollowpoint load. But you need a 32 Mag and several 22 lr barrels along with the 45/410(I gotta have this for the snakes on the range!) to catch up. Everybody needs a dozen barrels-that's how you make reloading and bullet casting cheap. Women tell me that it beats drinking or doing drugs-I just duck and run the other way, fast!

Over the years I have aquired over 22 barrels.  If I had to pick just 3 they would probably be:

1)  .22lr / 10"

2)   7mm TCU / 14"  with scope

3)  .357 Max / 10"

In my mind they would cover a broad range of animals to hunt and still be competitive should anyone want to try their hand at silhouette.
