spent 9 hours reading in here
« on: March 06, 2009, 02:02:32 AM »
I'm new to the H and R rifles and I have a few questions. First why does my latch have such a sideways motion it seems like it is broke. I have two of the rifles one is a .308 survivor the other a .204 ultra varmit. Both of them have alot of play in the latch with the barrel locked up. My .308 has none with the action open well it has side to side movement. My .204 has a little over a 1/16 play up and down with the action open. Both are factory fitted complete guns. I bought the wife the .308 and after sighting in and playing I was hooked went to the gun store and bought the .204 ultra. I have'nt shot the .204 yet as I havent bought a scope yet I can't wait. I was thinking about a 50mm bell for the .204 to get it closer to the barrel as the .308 has a 3X9X40 bushnell elite and there is alot of room under the scope to the barrel. I have bushnell elite on most everything I use 4200 and 3200 I cant afford a 6500. well any advise on the latch thing would be great I just hope I'm not hooked to bad. I read everything there is in FAQ'S and it does not mention the side to side movement in the latch with the barrel open or closed.

I am in no way a Handi expert but I just did some overhauling of my .223 Ultra Varmint. My latch has some play in it closed or open. I just assumed that was normal. For me, there were 2 things I did to tighten up groups. 1. I shimmed the spacer btween the action and forearm to get a nice straight fit with no play. There is no wiggle on the barrel when the action is closed, open or anywhere in between. the other major contributor to bringin in my groups was bedding the forearm with permapoxy putty. It takes 5 minutes of your time and costs 5 bucks.

you may not have found any in only 9 hours, but did you run across any posts by a fellow who goes by the name of Quick something.  He is the quiet sort, but sometimes helpful.

Welcome Big Nasty!! Latch is loose? Maybe you mean barrel release button or lever? I think you're just confused on terminology, the button will be sloppy loose with the action closed in comparison to when it's open. When the action is closed, the button will probably be loose enough to rattle if you shake the rifle, but when the action if open, it likely won't be as loose. There's always some sideways movement, that's normal. If you download Perklo's trigger hone files from the FAQs and Help sticky, you'll see why, that's just the way it's made.  ;)

Ya that's what I mean I'm sorry to cause a bunch of head scratching. (Hhmm what's this idiot talking about)sorry but yes I mean the barrel release button not latch. Like I was saying on my survivor when action is open it is solid except side to side. My Ultra with action open it still has a bit of up and down play and sloppy side to side. I am hearing that is common though. I sure apreciate the help guys. I also have another ? For ya all when we get a chance it left me scratching my head and I'm no expert but I have shot for a day or two or was that something else. Anyway thanks guys.

I don't know of the right form to post this, but the information and help that you all have given has been unbelivable, for anyone starting out the any H&R firearm you can't be beat.I have worked on many different firearms(AR-15,Colt 1911,Ruger single actions etc. but, the help here is the best.
