First time out with .223 Handi
« on: March 05, 2009, 11:43:02 AM »
The first load out of the chute , a 50 gr Hornady V-Max over 27 gr BL-C2 in Federal cases CCI400 primers.Tried 2 different cartridge lengths 2.3 and 2.34. It made a difference! The shorter length load shot ok for the get aquainted session. Smallest group for 3 shots at 100 yards was 5/8 inch.I'll say it was a fluke as the rest of the groups ran from 1 1/2 to 2 inches. The longer round gave groups ranging from 5/8 inch to 1 1/4 inch for 3 at 100. The glass was a pos Bushy 3x9 that fuzzed out on 9x so I used 7x.As these rifles are relatively light, its easy to over glass them.Pulse bounces are annoying to precision aiming... her trigger, from the factory, is a very nice 3 1/2 pounds. After 40 rounds there was no obvious copper fouling and the bore cleaned up very easily.I've heard that Handi barrels ned to have a hundred or so rounds fired before they settle in and start shooting their best.Gads! How good is this one gonna get? Another thing, this .223 has an extremely deep throat.I could seat the V-Max's out to hit the rifling , but wouldn't have enough bullet left in the case to secure it. With the 1-9 twist it would seem like the heavier .22's would do very well. Will try and report on them soome. I'm glad I got another Handi !!!!

I have a 1 in 12 twist bull barrel 223 that has been a 1/2 to 3/4 inch shooter form day one , your right about the long throats though , might explain why mine does so well with the 55g V-max but patterns like a shotgun with the stubby 35g stuff .  :o

 Double ,

I too have the 1 in9 223 barrel and it absolutely loves the Hornady TAP ammo in the 75 gr offering .. As far as reloads the 68s from Hornady and the 69s from Sierra have both done very well ... Those TAP rounds at the range ? 3 round groups will cover up with a dime all day long , and this is a fitted barrel ;)

Thanks for the replys. One thing I forgot to mention is that she vertically strings. Her horizontal dispersion is generally around 1/4 inch. That needs correction, but i wonder if its ignition related ( using regular and not magnum primers) or rifle related. The Handi I had years ago did not vertically string. Of course it could be the loose nut behind the buttplate too. This rifle and I are just getting to know one another...

Read the Handi Basics 101 sticky, I think you'll find the solution to the vertical stringing there.  ;)

You get a chance, try some Black Hills 68 grs. match.  Those seem to shoot well out of any .223 i've had w/ a 1 in 9.
