H&R in 450Marlin
«

Caught the handi-H&R bug and now looking at a 450Marlin. I've had a 45-70 in a Marlin and shot the Garrets, and want to know how that would compare to this single shot in 450Marlin, as to recoil. Will it really beat me up?

If you look at Buffalo Bore's 45-70 ammo compared to their 450M ammo, you'll see their 45-70 ammo is loaded a tad warmer than the 450M, just scroll up for the 45-70 specs. The 45-70 can be loaded to considerably higher if you want to go into the modern rifle data, something the 450M doesn't offer with published data. What the 450M has to offer is it's available in warmer loads if you only shoot over-the-counter factory ammo. Other than that, it's a ballistic twin to the 45-70 when loaded to levergun pressures, either loaded to levergun pressure will have recoil that many shooters object to, there aren't any "trapdoor" factory loads for the 450M, those are the loads that most shooters favor due to the tolerable recoil.

I have 2 450 marlin handis.
My 18" h&r 450 marlin with a synthetic stock is NOT the first gun I shoot if I take several guns to the range. After 10 shots of lever-evolution ammo, I'm done for the day. It beats my shoulder up so much that I can't hold any of my other rifles still enough to hit anything.
My uncut barrel gun has a heavy hardwood stock with a recoil reducer and it is really no worse than a 270 or 30-06.
It all depends on the weight of the gun.

I'd get the 45-70 and then a 450 marlin.

You could get the 450 and try a box of factory stuff. I am pretty confident you will get Dies for that cartridge after shooting that one box or even earlier and start to reload with a more gentle load.

If you can handle the Garretts in a Marlin, you can handle the 450 M...Never could figure out why someone would buy a large caliber, them ask if the recoild hurts...
...or vice versa...ask if a large caliber recoils much....Or buy one THEN complain when they get slapped around.... LOL.
Luck on your quest.
