Its best application is in AR-15 platform. It turns the 15 into a more realistic hunting rifle. Some people like it in TC guns as a low recoil round.

I just don't see what it could do, that a 7-30Waters couldn't do better and the Waters is a rimmed case.  There have been mis-fire issues with the 6.8Rem is some cases too.  Sorry, don't mean to sound so negative, but I guess to answer your question, to me, in a Contender, no I just don't think it fills a need.

Doesn't anybody remember the stuck rimless 7 TCU while on the firing line losing seconds before the time limit of 120 seconds was counting fast?
Steel have the 15 inch brass remover rod the most of us had to carry up to the line for both TC and Merrill's!
Having to remove the bent ejector...pound it down so as to eject spent shells once more was way too much fun
Re-curve the inner spring, there making it put pressure on ejector?
Sure there's a need for another rimless 30 cal to replace the rimmed 30-30 or 7 Waters!

I bought one on a whim to make into a small deer rifle for my kid.  It'll have 20 inch bull barrel when I'm done.  110 grain Barnes at 2600 fps or so should work wonders.  Don't care about the rimless part.  That'll definitely slow him down to pick the brass out.  Should work fine on anything small to mid-sized.  Yep... other cartridges out there.  But I though this one sounded cool...  so I bought it.

I,ve got one in 16" G2, choate folding stock. 110 v-max, 29.7 g h322(hot) shots 1". Have 4.5x14 nikon on it. Fold it up, put it in my backpack go to my stand.I love it, each to their own........Rockislandrod

 as long as there is a market within walking distance, NO cartridge is absolutely needed! Since when does NEED enter into the equation for buying any gun??? I have 7tcu,7br 7-30 7IHMSA, 7-08., and .280 cal. guns. Also there are several .22 cal, 6mm, 25 's and even some 30 cals. There are the 2 ,45-70 and a 35 whelen a 30-30 , a 44mag or 2 .Some 12 gauge shot guns and some 22rim fire guns. I wont list all the hand guns. With ALL these (many with overlapping uses) WHY would I want/NEED another. BECAUSE  I want it! The thing does NOT need to fill some one else's idea of need or want, just make ME happy.

I have enjoyed this calibre. Virtually no recoil and light noise makes it easy to shoot. Good for vermin to medium sized animals. No need, just another option.

I have one on a G2 carbine outfit. I set mine up in a lathe and machined the back of the chamber out to accept a 30/30 size rim, I now use formed 30/30 brass. The gun shoots great with very light recoil and no extraction problems.

Have a factory 23" barrel.

Very efficient cartridge, accurate, pleasant to shoot.  Nice for casual shooting on the silhouette range, but probably wouldn't pick it for serious target or hunting applications.

The 6.8 Rem seems to offer about the same ballistics as the 7-30 Waters.  Since the Waters is an excellent whitetail cartridge out to 200 yards, I would think you could easily expect the same excellent performance.  It would also be great for varmints. 

I was hoping our military would fall in love with the 6.8 or the 6.5 Grendel and use it for the M16 platform but I don't think that will happen.

I have a 15" 6.8 for the contender and I love it.  I am getting 2450 fps with factory 110 gr Vmax bullets.  I have not killed anything with it yet but my friend has killed sheep over 200 lbs out to 200 + yards and has had excellent bullet performance with the 110 hornady factory hollow points.  I have seen a couple of  bullets he was able to recover and expansion was perfect. Almost the same velocity as the 7-30 waters with less powder and less recoil.  I was very impressed.

If you don't like wearing hearing protection while hunting. My 26" barrel is quieter than a 223 with a 26" barrel.
