3" slugs in 3 1/2" chambered guns
« on: March 02, 2009, 10:22:08 AM »
I did a search, but could not find anything. It seems that I read on here a discussion of the safety of shooting 2 /4" and 3" shells in a gun that was chambered for 3 1/2" shells. Something about to much space between the end of the shell and the barrell. Reason I'm asking is that I found a good deal on an 870 Super Mag. I would like to use this gun for both turkey and deer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

There is no reason the shorter shell would be dangerious, the question that would come up is accuracy. With the long jump from the case to the rifleings would they still shoot accurately. My guess is that they would do fairly good. Try a few different brands of the cheap slugs and you will probly be able to find one that shoot well enough.

Is it rifled or smooth bore?  Catfish is probably right on the accuracy if it is rifled, but you probably wouldn't ever notice a difference.  If it is smooth bore, you will not notice any difference unless your particular gun likes a specific slug load better than the others, they all do.  As far as shot, no difference except the recoil.

Thanks for the fast replies. I guess I was worried about nothing. Oh well, better safe than sorry. I went with the Remington 870 Super Mag in Real Tree camo. Can't wait to get out and start patterning it. I know first give a through cleaning.  :)

Thanks again,

Tom

I've got a 3" 870 and that has all the recoil that I can handle.  Let us know your reaction if you try the 3 1/2" loads. :o

I have an 870 super mag that's been modified to my liking for the hunting I do. I shoot 2 3/4" brenneke's mostly out of that gun. I've onl;y ever put a handfull of 3 1/2" waterfowl loads through it and never thought of doing it again. I only have a 3 1/2" cha, mber because IF i ever need to shoot them, I know I can.

Leading can be a problem in this gun but as long as I clean it regularly it is not. I practice from field positions and can hit the kill zone on a deer from a lasered 129 yards 9 times out of ten with 2 3/4" KO's. I hunt closer than that, just in practice you understand. So go ahead and shoot what you want.
the gun can handle it. Just get the lead out often enough and accuracy shouldn't suffer.   jammer
