45-70 / 720 gr. load data ??
« on: February 28, 2009, 03:27:55 PM »
I have recently purchased some 720 gr. bullets for my 45-70 and I am having a hard time finding any load data for it. The only data I have found is with Unique powder but I was wanting to load it a little hotter if I could. Any data would be greatly appreciated

I guess most would ask why would anyone want to shoot a 720 gr bullet in a 45-70? I am shooting 700 gr in my 500 s&w handi rifle and I really like them. I was planning on using H4198 or 3031 to start with and was just checking to see if anyone has tried these yet or had a good starting load suggestion. I don't plan on shooting these all the time but they were just too cool not to try. Any loads or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

I wouldn't think there's enough case capacity for a bullet that size to be effective in a 45-70. ???

Tim and Tyler over in the NEF / H&R forum have fired some of those ... at lest Tyler has, we have the vidio!   ;D  But in their 45-120's.  Seems to me Tyler said he had stabilization problems with Rick's long bullets In the H&R.  :-\

Yeah, the 1.6" long bullet would have to be pushed over 2000fps in a 1:20" twist barrel using the Greenhill formula, impossible in the 45-70 at any sane pressure, seems to me I ran it thru QL at something like 180,000psi for 2000fps with a case full of compressed fast burning powder, and that's seated to 3.25" COL.

Kinda leaves out the H&R don't it Tim!   ;D  I meant to ask the OP what twist rate he was shooting.   :-\

I think he's shooting an H&R as he posted the same question in the H&R forum before posting this thread, but it could just be those fellas are on top of all things 45-70 and he thought it best to post there first!!! ;D

Wow, 720 grain, how many bounces does it take to get to 100yds. ;D

Heaviest I've loaded is 550 gr.  Can't really picture anything I'd need a heavier load on, unless its an M1 Abrams....
