I was recently offered some 3 foot long pieces of 2.5 inch steel. Is anyone interested in making me a coehorn mortar or howitzer barrel in exchange for the rest of the material? Example - you make some thing for me using 12" and keep the rest. Of course I'll pay shipping. Let me know if anyone is interested.

I am looking for something simple to expand (start) my collection. I will send you some pictures of what I had in mind. Unless I'm being unrealistic about the true amount of time going into a small project.

I also found out today that there might be a 2 or 3 foot piece of 2.5 inch OD brass scrap too that I can have. They are seeing if it is still around.

I'm having a tough time attaching pictures. Can someone PM me to let me know how to do it?

What you attached is word document. Instead doing that go to the folder when your pictures are and attach them instead of inserting them into word docment and attaching that.

that brass piece could be a very beautiful cannon , 3/4" cal and 20" - 22" total length .
then you got material for the trunnions also if its 2 feet long .
if its 3 feet it could be a golfball mortar also , or maybe 2 .

I attach an original drawing here from an artillery handbook dated 1706
but this is just my style of cannons , you probably want something from the cw period .
the 2 at the bottom I really like .

but its lots of work so I guess you need to put in a few bucks also , no one works for nothing , or almost nothing

steel and other metal prices are the lowest now since approximately 10-15 years .
they even talk about closing the steel plant here in town now .
soon this can be a ghost town .

about the attacments , its very easy .
when you finished your writing just click the "additional options"
search for your picture in the computer and attach it
then just post it .

I looked at the drawings you attached and what's not to like???

I found out tonight the rods are 304 stainless steel and there will be about 12 to 20 feet of material.

Now Dan... the material trade for labor reflects the tough economical times and lack of money. The War Department said "No more crazy spending". I'm coming up with ways around the W.D..

I guess it's time to go for the sympathy ploy and mention the 5 month old baby we have......

thats a lot , and stainless are still expensive .
you could try to have someone to make an barrel from the brass rod and pay them in stainless .

2 1/2" material is too small for much other than golf ball mortars, at least in relatively large projectile sizes. Here is a link to a post linking to several golf ball Coehorns built by forum attendees several years ago.

could maybe be enough for a golf ball caliber 1841 mt howitzer , or ??
the stainless would of couse be much stronger then brass .

It's a little small for a golf ball mountain howitzer (should be 2.68") although you could do that if you make the chamber only 13/16" in diameter.

yeah , and the stainless is a much better alloy then the original cast bronze so I suppose it would be safe enough

the barrel at the bottom of that 1706 drawing would look great in brass .
with an 16 millimeter bore

I ordered a naval barrel from Dom a little while ago. That should be here soon.

I have been working on a carriage. I should have it ready for a barrel by the end of the week.
I'll have to post some pictures pretty soon. So far it looks pretty good.

I can do the wood working just not the metal work. I'm think I might have to order a couple of the mini barrels so I can work on those as models in between bigger projects.a

Still no takers on on the original offer.

There are several problems with the original offer. First is the liability issue which no one seems to be able to get around. Second will be the shipping for the amount of material you are talking about. And you still haven't said exactly what you would like to be made from the material in question.

Dom's piece will no doubt satisfy you. Enjoy it.

but if no vent is drilled , could you still get sued ??
then its just a decoration piece ,
if anyone alter that decoration piece couldnt be your responsibility . or ??
if so any pipe manufacturer should get sued for att those "cannons" manufactured from ordinary water pipes .

The reality of the American legal scene is that anyone can sue anyone else any time. They may not win but if they lose, they don't pay your legal fees. So people who have to do business carry lots of insurance which the customers pay for in increased prices which makes the US manufacturers even less competitive in the world market.

That's one of the reasons why most of my mortars are OVERBUILT in dimensions and materials.

well now I do understand why
then it would probably be really dangerous to sell correct scaled bronze scale models to usa .
maybe best to forget that idea , and also the idea to teach how to cast your own piece .
as I probably could get sued for that also .
better to just have fun by myself .

I was only trying to approach this from the stand point of a mutual benefit. Ideally someone in Michigan would have said I can take it and the next time I make something, I'll make you something.

Considering your question about what type of barrel I was thinking? Beggers can't be chosey....

I think you always run a risk of someone doing something stupid. That's why sites like this are great for teaching people the right way to do things.

I had considered doing it but I have to many projects in which am involved with others right now. Perhaps for your second gun.You are close enough,there isnt shipping. We normaly finish our projects(or quit maching)the end of april.
