should i trade?
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:05:35 AM »
i have a nice savage model 10 bolt action with accutrigger and a 24inch heavy barrel in 308 it is blued with synthetic stocks. i found a nice model 12 stainless with accutrigger and a 24? inch heavy fluted barrel with what looks like a factory muzzle break made right onto the end of the barrel. it has a laminated wood target stock. i have hunted with the model 10 and would do some still hunting from the back porch of the cabin with the model 12 as i have in the past with the model 10 but i would mainly use the model 12 for long range target again as i have with the model 10. would the model 12 be more accurate than the model 10? enough so to be worth say 200 bucks difference since the model 12 is used and in a gun shop. let me know what you guys think before i do anything i might regret although i cant see why i would
thanks in advance for any help with this

I doubt one would be more accurate then the other. you never get a real grantee that the one you are getting would be better then what you have.

You would have to fine a load the 12 likes just as you did for the 10.

you didn't say so I am assuming the model 12 is a 308 as well, unless you are real recoil sensitive or have shoulder issues you really don't need a break with the 308. The break will redirect the muzzle blast more back to you then straight out the barrel so you will hear it more and could  damage your hearing quicker.

If it was me I would keep the model 10 and work up loads for it.

Freezer, I like the way you think !   ;D   Take it from a guy who's made the mistake !  NEVER let a "good

shooter" get away from you !  Buy the 12 & keep the 10 !   JMHO   Jim    :)

And the Chior said "AMEN"  If the gun is accurate, fits you and the biggest nitch you have stay with it!  With a little knowledge and pratice you can strech it a little.  The laws of physics don't change just hold a little higher.  If you get rid of it for a pig in a poke you may very well regret it.

I would think that the Fluted stainless laminate stock rifle will be heavier. If you  plan on doing a lot of walking with this rifle you might want to consider that. I have two Savage rifles and there is 3 lbs difference in weight. My Mod 116 fluted stainless, muzzle brake, laminate stock, 7mag is 11.2 lbs. Too heavy for me to lug around very far. My Mod. 111, blued, synthetic, .270 weighs in a 8 lbs. IMO $200. difference is not worth the trade. Does the factory stock come with the Rifle? I think they can do better on the price.
