best smoothbore 20 gauge slugs
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:14:34 AM »
Not a huge fan of Foster style slugs but I have used some of the older Brenneke slugs that are 7/8ths of an ounce. I can't find them locally now but the Brenneke KO slug is easily available at 3/4 of an ounce.  Going to pass on Remington's 5/8ths sluggers but may use some Winchester 3/4 ounce slugs.  I am going to do some hog hunting where we wade around in water up to our chests in a muddy swamp pulling pirogues behind us to sneak up on small islands where hogs will be sleeping in the middle of the day. My friend that does this a lot uses a 12 gauge single shot because it is easy to clean and is very reliable even soaked in muddy water.  Shots will be at less than 50 feet and he says usually more like 30 feet. His is a 28 inch barreled modified with just a bead and he says he has no problem hitting hogs in the head or neck with this gun using Foster style Winchester slugs. My only single shot is a 20 gauge NEF also choked modified.  I have a model 1300 pump but he says this is the worst for getting messed up in muddy water due to the way the locking lugs are spring loaded and project out from the bolt.  I really don't want to get it as wet as he says we will get our guns. Remingtons are easier to clean but the steel recievers on them rust quickly.  I want a smoothbore because this is in Water Moccasin heaven and since I will do this in april I will have time to put sights on the gun if I can't do well enough with a simple bead at 50 feet.

The best slug will depend on the individual gun, the Brenekke have alwats been good slugs the winchesters are the cheapest that I have found.

Try the Remington sluggers. They are a very accurate slug in all my guns, and have plenty of power for those hogs.I tried the Brenneke slugs and out of a box of five I had three pierced primers.

I have shot some sluggers and they were accurate but they only weigh 5/8ths of an ounce, just a thin lead cup.

the remington buckhammer is 1oz..you can get it 2 3/4 or 3 inch.. it hits so much harder than the 5/8 that theres no comparisom..although the 5/8 will take most anything also...i didn t even buy the 3 inch as my guns set for the 2 3/4.... its just breaking bone an making a 50 cal.. size hole ... ive not got a deer with it yet but have shot the the 5/8...i believe the 1oz out of my gun is gonna hittim so hard ,,he probably gonna get knocked dn ..even it my shots not perfect..so that allows you to knock him dn again ,,if im on my game..its hard for me to believe a deer is gonna get up an run with 2 in him like that...
one thing

though ,,you might want to consider a limbsaver for you gun..like i say it shoots real hard..in my gun anyway
i load one 2b buckshot to walk to my stand.... theres always a chance you can get you best deer then...
i wouldnt recommend the magnums ..although my gun likes them ..the recoil is not quite as much as the
1 oz slug an its not listed as magnum..reason i will use it is no practice necessary so what i got nows proba bly a lifetime supply..
mines good for deer out to 30 yrds or so..its just there if i jump one ,on the way to my brush an heavy wood stand.....good luck slim

My son's Mossberg 20guage youth gun shoots awesome with regular foster slugs at 50yards, through a modified choke tube. I can keep every shot inside a 5 inch black circle at 50 yards with a double beed sight. I have two Remington 870 mags with rifled sights/smooth bore that can't do that.

We set up camp on a point, poured some corn out on the ground and in the water 40 yards or so both ways down the shore line. When I woke up I could hear the hogs breathing out with their noses under water, bubbling noises while looking for the corn in the water.  Crawled out of the tent and shot a 175 pound sow using a Brenneke old style slug out of my 20 gauge. It jumped and ran out into the water, we got it no problem.  Spent the rest of the weekend drinking Benchmark whiskey and playing poker.
