.308 Survivor issues
« on: February 23, 2009, 10:37:48 AM »
Several days ago I posted a question regarding accuracy. I appreciated the response I got from you gentlemen. My accuracy problem was/is, a result of COPPER FOULING. Bought some stuff to remove the copper from the lands, and now I'm back in business. Read the posting regarding this issue, guess I will just have to wait and see if it continues..................., or stops. I am a couple years shy of 60, and I have had white ( not gray ), hair, since I was in my late 20's. Something about discussing gun issues with "gray beard" guys like me, that makes me appreciate the years of experience out there. Again I thank you all for your helpfull suggestions.

Glad you figured it out Steve!!  This copper fouling should calm down as the barrel breaks in and smooths out.

Glad to hear it was a simple fix!  What did you use to clean it out?

444    I expect that you will find this site to be almost addictive. The folks here are almost the epitomy of the people Obama called those people who bitterly cling to their guns and their Bibles. Rush Limbaugh has given us the nickname "The Bitter Clingers"

Fellas at the local gun shop suggested that I use Bore Tech Inc., Eliminator Bore Cleaner. Pretty expensive @ 20.00 / 5 oz or so. I was told that they got a discolored blue patch out of a couple of rifles they cleaned with all the other stuff in the store. It is water soluable, and environmentally friendly, and does not have any ammonia. Well it seems that since my accuracy has returned, and I will have this stuff for many cleanings, money well spent. Thanks for the interest. I do cling to my Bible every morning in front of the fireplace with a cup of coffee, while sitting in a comfy chair. Then after work, I either reload or go shooting as time permits. I am not bitter though.

Bore Tech Eliminator is good stuff if you don't mind attending it, but the foaming cleaners work better if you just want to apply it and leave it over night using only a patch to wipe it out,  no elbow grease or time spent brushing at all. Midsouth sells it a LOT cheaper than that tho at $23 for 16oz, I use it for break-in cleaning at the range. ;)

Quick,

A)  What type of foaming bore cleaner do you use?

B)  How do you keep it in the bbl where it will contact all sides of the riflings?  Turn it upside down?

I used some outers foaming bore cleaner once, and was less than impressed.

I don't think there's many topics that come up as often as cleaning, here are a bunch of previous threads on the topic.

Tim

First of all, this discussion is about Handirifles, not semi-autos and other complicated firearms, cleaning a Handi is about as simple as it gets, there's no action to really worry about, keep the latch dry and you're good. If ya get into other actions, the tools change, but that's for another forum. ;)

What is the recommended maintenance procedure for a handi rifle bore?

I'll tell ya right up front, there are a lot of other things that I enjoy a heck of a lot more than pushing a cleaning rod thru a bore, the foaming cleaners eliminate about 90% of the time you spend on cleaning if you're smart enough to figure out the best method of taking advantage of it.

A wise person can clean guns at the same time as he does a whole bunch of other things cuz the foam works while you're not there! ;) Run a patch of Hoppe's Elite cleaner(see the 6mmBr article) thru the bore to kill the carbon, run a dry patch thru to remove the Hoppe's, then foam the bore and put the gun aside until the next day, I usually let it soak for about 12hrs, 6 or so on each side, the foam settles and doesn't treat the entire bore evenly.

While the foam is doing the copper cleaning, I go on with my life to more fun things, retirement is wonderful that way. ;D The next day, run a few dry patches thru it, then an Eezox patch and a dry patch the bore is done, wipe the outside down with Eezox  and you're done, max time actually spent hands-on is 10-15 minutes, it don't get no simpler than that, the only way to spend less time and effort on it is to have someone else do it for ya!!!

I have a bottle of the original Hoppe's solvent that smells so good, the new stuff without the hazardous stuff in it just don't smell right, I've been tempted to just stick a wick in it and set it on the shelf as my personal sportman's airwick!! :D

If you want the best buy on foaming cleaners, get the Gunslick 12oz, it's $11 ($13 now) at Sportsman's Warehouse, Walmart sells the Outers for $6.88 for 5oz if you don't have a SW nearby, they're both the same products made by Milfoam.

I suppose that answers my questions.  It didn't really occur to me to foam it 2x's, once on top and once on bottom.  Since I don't really have the setup to leave my bbl sitting around all night, I'll have to stick to the old fashioned way of, newspaper, copper cleaner, oil, brushes and patches, on the living room coffee table while I watch TV  :P  ;D  ;D  ;D

The only time I foam it the second time is after the first 12hr soak is if I expect more than routine fouling or am cleaning lead from the barrel, WipeOut works excellent on lead, it disolves the alloys making the lead come out in sheets and flecks with just a patch, but it takes a couple days for it to work. But it sure beat brushing!!  ;D That's another nice thing about WipeOut, it can be left in for days without any problems, don't ask how I know that!! ::)
