44 Mag Cast Bullet
« on: February 23, 2009, 09:35:28 AM »
I would like to load some rounds for my 44 Mag Handi and would like to use a pointed cast bullet.  Does anyone know of such a bullet?  Any weight over 240 grain would be okay, but preferably in the 240 - 300 wight range.
Thanks, buzz

Actually I don't think you do but merely THINK you want to.  :o

When you might think there is an advantage to be offered by that pointed bullet there really isn't not in practical use. Inside of 250 yards nose shape has very minimal effect on ballistics. Oh sure it will be flattern by an inch or so at 250 and will arrive there with a few more ft. lbs. of energy which is totally meaningless. But such a pointed cast bullet will be next to useless on game and will gain you nothing on targets either.

Stick to the tried and true designs and you'll be way ahead.

That answers that question then.  Should I be looking at a round nose maybe?

If you're only punching holes in paper then sure or if shooting metal but if you're shooting critters chose a wide flat meplat bullet. SWC and other wide meplat bullets make neater holes in paper also. If 500 yard target shooting is on the agenda by all means use a higher BC bullet if you can find one. The Hornady plastic tip bullets are supposed to help in that regard but I'd have to see them perform at that kinda range to believe it.

There's the 265gr FTX, but it's made for the .444.

I want to use this as a stalking/woods gun.  Max range of 125 yards, primarily deer and hogs.  So, SWC then for best performance in this use?  What would be a good weight?

Yup and 240 grains is enough but more doesn't hurt. The standard is the Lyman 429421 aka Keith bullet. RCBS makes a similar mould they call the 250-KT. If you don't cast yourself plenty of bullet casters use those or similar moulds.

I use the Lee 310gr gas checked in my 44mag handi with near max load of W296.On game out to 150 yards or so it should perform excellent given you use the proper lead alloy. For hunting with cast bullets I like the wide nose flat points.

Yes, but lighter than 240gr.

Probably not what you want, going by the other comments but...
IF...you decided you did want what you originally asked about, look at the pics of the 429303 Lyman.

http://www.castpics.net/

Can't get much more pointed than that.  Some of those guys did a group buy on that discontinued Lyman mold last year, the story was that cast hard, it could out penetrate most jacketed slugs

FWIW: My copy of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has a two page article about the 429303. First Edition of the Handbook. Sometime in the 1960's. One of the tests is dated in 1957. Doesn't mention or picture the 357 vrsion. Designer was Carl F. Hudson. He called it the "Hi-Velo-Pen", said the design was for penetration, high velocity and incidentally had a sharp shoulder for target practice. He has pictures, says it will cut through 3/16" steel plates, unlike the factory load. Used loads from H.P.White with 2400 powder, 1800+ fps. Be careful if you try it as 2400 powder has a reputation for having more oomph now than it did way back when.
If you are going to knock it off, I would think that the gas check would be essential. At least if you are going to use it for the intended purposes?

That 429303 was exactly what I was thinking about, but I don't know if its heavy enough.  Do I need to use a gas checked bullet in the SWC?
