Good price for .44 Mag. ?
« on: February 21, 2009, 03:38:13 PM »
I found a new .44 mag. Handi for $239.00.  It has a normal rifled (not Microgroove) extractor barrel.  Wgat do you guys think about the price?  I've got a .30-30 and a .45-70 already, so I really don't need it.

That's about the going price for them now. Just be aware that current production 44mags are on SB1 frames and can't be fitted with other rifle barrels, just shotgun/Huntsman barrels, they don't have sights on them which is a dead give away to them, just have a scope mount, and they have the new style synthetic stock with checkering.

You only think you really don't need it.  Once you get it you will see just how much you DID need it.  They just went up to $249.99 around here now, they were 239.99.  Mine has suprised me with how well it shoots, makes me look good. ::)  DP

I have "roll yer own" 240gr Hornady XTP setting on top of a max load of H-110.  I bought a box of magtech 240gr SJSP and they seem to shoot good in my Handi, not as good in my lever gun.  Will be trying LilGun instead of H-110 later this year.  It works great in the 357 mag and also in the 45 colt loads.  H-110 is so fine it tries to bind up my Lyman powder dispenser where LilGun doesn't.  Since I use the Lyman for everything, I want to use powder that works good in it.  I haven't made any lighter loads for the 44 mag, but if I do I will try W 231 or Hodgdon Tite-GROUP as they both work good in the 45 colt for lighter loads.  DP

It has iron sights and a wood stock, so is it on a SB2 frame?  How can you tell the difference in the frames?.

Sounds like an SB2 to me, the SB1 framed version is marked that it can't be fitted with other barrels, the physical differences in the frames can be seen in the FAQs.  ;)

sounds like a good price to me. I saw one at a chain sporting goods store in N.E. Ohio for 299.00  .It was a wood stock and open sights.

$239 isn't bad.  I just bought one for $259, because it was a new in the box older production gun on the better SB2 frame.

As for not needing it because you have 30-30 and 45-70, the 44mag is a much different cartridge than either one of those.  I guess in all practicality you may not really need it, but do you want it?  44 magnum is one of my current favorite rounds, so when I saw a Handi on the rack I had to get it.  You may or may not need it, but I doubt you will be dissapointed once you have it.

I was pleased with the out of the box acuracy of mine.  I went to the range to break it in a little.  Cleaned the bore, figured I'd shoot two rounds then clean again.  Saw a tin can and a golf ball sitting on the dirt at the 25 yard range.  Shot the can, no suprise it hit.  Went for the golf ball, sent it flying.  Didn't expect an out of the box golf ball shot.  Had to chuckle a little while I swabbed out the bore.

I saw 3 .44's at Gander Mtn. today.  2 with synthetic stocks, 1 with pallet wood.  All were marked SB2.

Only on the barrel? AFAIK, all 44/s and 357's are marked SB2 on the barrel. At least the older stock was...
