Picture needed, Win 92 Carbine...
« on: August 30, 2003, 03:13:39 AM »
Hi,

I'm working on a 1900 made 92 Carbine (44-40).  It came with 27,000   coats of varnish and a terrible reblue, it also came cheap.  I've got the wood looking good, the metal also, only thing left is the front sight, it's brass and someone put silver solder on it trying to make it look original.  I understand the originals were german silver and I'm planning to make one out of an old siver coin.  Only problem is I don't know what they looked like.  I've found many pictures but not a close-up of a carbine blade.

Anyone have a source for a good picture, color would be nice.

Thanks

Thanks, forgot about this post.  That is a front sight for a rifle, the carbine is different.  The base is part of the bbl. and it has a slot in it and the blade is pinned in the slot.  I'm pretty sure it's the same as a 94 carbine, I have one of those and it looks the same, just want to be sure before a I ruin a silver dime.. ..

BTW:  The gun is complete except for the sight blade, man what a nice gun.  Light as a feather and smooth as silk, I did a little browning on the metal parts, didn't sand the wood but got rid of all that varnish.  It really looks good, looks like a 100+ year old gun should and it shoots great.  It's my new favorite "walking" gun..

1860, you're right.  John's pic is from '92 rifle.  On my original round barrel rifle the upper portion of this dovetailed blade is brass rather than silver but other than that identical.  It may take some searching to find the correct shape because almost every one that I paid any attention to has had the blade changed.  I've seen many different shapes.  An antique ad or sale flyer of the period might be of help.
