Keyholing

I recently got a 204 ruger in a H&R and I took it out to the range today. I shot it a few times and I noticed the bullets were keyholing the bullet was puttin an egg tear mark on the paper. I was using Hornandy 40 grain vmax's I did some research and I seen other people have had this problem. I don't see how this should be normal but I was wondering if any one else has had this problem and what they did to fix it ?

Generally, this is the result of using a bullet too heavy for the amount of twist in the barrel.  There are many .204 owners here, and I'm sure they will chime in soon.

forsome reason your bullets are'n being stablized could be twist or bore too big or reallt bad crown.

Thanks for the quick replys guys. This gun is only 2 days old and I am new to the caliber so I am learning as I go with it. I am goin to pick up a box of 32 grain bullets and see if that helps. If not I don't know what else to do.

There are a lot of threads on this subject!  I am using both the 32gr accu-point Remington and 32gr v-max and they both have eyes.  They can both do a 1 MOA @ 200yds using a Bushnell 4x12.  It appears that the v-max slightly out performs the Remington but that could be me.

Be patient! Break your barrel in correctly and read the 101 etc and float the forearm.(I simply made a washer under the barrel lug using a soft plastic material.)  You might need to get 30-60 rds before you really fall in love with this gun and it starts grouping tight.  Again stay with the 32gr for now.  You made a good choice with the 204.   It really does a number on yotes and has excellent ballistics.

kansasj thanks alot once again this caliber is new to me and I never had a problem like this before. I been reading the 101 all nite I am learning alot from it. I only put about 10 rounds through the gun so it seems I have a ways to go before its broke in. Thanks for your help

I have to agree with Larry, mine shoots the 40gr Vmax real good with max loads of BL-C2, so does Mitchell's. One member(95 Roadking) had his 204 barrel replaced due to defective rifling, his may not have been the only one in that run of barrels.

Thanks for the rest of the information you guys are great and its helping alot. I will try 32 grain bullets out of it this weekend if that dosen't work I will call H&R and see what they have to say?
