Encore question and frustration
« on: August 29, 2003, 01:01:41 PM »
I sold a staniless 209x50 and bought a 209x45 with wood stock and blue reciever and barrel. The wood has good figure and blueing is good but I have a little problem. The action doesn't want to open unless you pull REAL hard on the release. My 11 year old could open the old one but couldn't get the new one open. I greased every point I could find and it only helped a very small amount. Of corse the pin is sloppy but the trigger seems to be a little better than average. I shot it today and the groups were all over the place(like 9" at 50 yards). I may have a 1-20" barrel. I only shot 1 type bullet and 100 grains of loose 777 so I am going to try some more loads before calling Thompson. Does anyone know a fix for the action problem. I almost bought a 700 Remington and a Knight disc to replace the stainless encore and my 7mm-08 barrel but thought I would try ONE MORE TIME. Me thinks, I might have made a mistake. Thanks, Don PS- Not trying to tick anyone off, just a little frustrated with a 550.00 rifle that you have to buy springs, pins, special forearms and custom load to get out of box groups. :(

Give Thompson a call and send it in.  They will take care of it.  As far as custom loads go . . . I have heard many say that their barrels just plain shoot good.  No special treatment.  Mine shot fantastic (7M-08) after a few warming up shots.  So Thompson is sending me a new barrel.  These rifles/pistols can have quirks . . . but they are an obsession to many of us anyway.

Well, I figured it out  . I put my 7MM-08 barrel on the reciever and it opened ok. Still a little stiff but a lot better. It seems the spring in the latch is about twice as stiff as the one on my 7MM-08. I know the 209x45 doesn't need more tension than the 7MM-08 so I will finish trying to ge the 209X45 to shoot before calling Thompson :( . Don

Check to see if there is any corrosion on the locking lugs, this could make it hard to open. You didn't say what type of bullet you were shooting, if you haven't tried powerbelts give them a try. I've been shooting them out of my 209x50 and they are impressive. I'm new at muzzleloading so haven't been able to try very many combinations as of yet. Mike

If you have a 1:20 twist, you might try some White Powerstar 350 grain sabot bullets.  Be prepared to grunt and groan as you push the bullet down the barrel.

Memory's failing me.  I tired the White Powerstars in my 1:28, NOT the  1:20 209x45 barrel.   NOTHING I tried shot well in my 1:20 barrel.

T/C swapped me out for a 1:28 and it's doing much better.  I wouldn't waste a lot of time and money trying to get that 1:20 to shoot.
WHUT?

First off the over size pins are a bounce of nonsense and a waste of money. And if you have a 1:20 barrel t/c should replace it, they replaced mine. I would try 90 grs. of pyrodex or 777 and a 180 gr. XTP MAG SABOT bullet.
