Hornet problem--Again---
« on: February 12, 2009, 12:18:14 PM »
About 2 weeks back I posted that I was having trouble with brass sticking in my 22 hornet handi.  I did the chamber polishing as recomended polished the ejector and put a bb in front of the spring.  The problem seemed to be fixed.  I thought anyway.  After reloading a few more shells it started again.  I am using a lee loader and using remington brass and I am trimming them.  When I had the ejector out I tested the neck sized trimmed rounds and found about a third that stuck. some would fit below flush of the barrel. Just a hair.  These stuck every time with a slight tap.  Other odd ones would just stick too.  After discarding the stickers after reloading I find about a 4th wont rechamber again.  Out of the 50 shells I have about 15 left and only reloaded them 3 times.  Could this lot of brass been that bad?  I have heard the Win. hornet brass is thicker.  Could switching brass cure this? Or should I just give up on the neck sizing?  This has been frustrating from the get go.

I had problems neck sizing and after going to full lenght have not had problems.  Are you lubing your brass to neck size?  SOme people still do and I was just wondering that if you are lubing, are you cleaning the lube off before chambering?  That could be a culprit too.  Just some thoughts.  Good luck!

I only neck size the Hornet with a Lee collet die, never had a problem, but I am using Win brass, I have some Rem brass too, but have only loaded it once, none stuck tho with max loads of Lil'gun and 40gr Vmax, but the Win brass with 12.5gr Lil'gun and 35gr Vmax shoot extremely well for me, so I never tried the Rem any more. The Win brass was used when I bought it and the barrel from Raynor, I've loaded and shot it twice since, on my third reloading now.

It looks like you might have to full length size your brass.
You shouldn't have any trouble after that.

If the chamber is slightly out of round then it will make a difference in how the round is rotated whether or not a fired round will chamber or not.  Try a piece rotated in several positions and see if there is any difference, if there is then you probably need to full length size.  Larry

I have a Handi SL in 22 Hornet. It seems to be extremely sensitive to over pressure. If I push the limit it wants to stick no matter if I am using Remington or Winchester brass. Some of the loads using Lil'Gun that members here say they are using and some book values using Lil'Gun make my brass stick. I have been using a minimum load of W296 (12.4) with pistol primers under a 34 grain bullet. I get around 3000 fps with the 20" barrel. I do not get any brass sticking at all. I know that others have used massive amounts of Lil'Gun and had very good accuracy and no sticking problems, but that has not been my experience. I get erratic pressure jumps from one load to the next. I can tell this, because one will shoot just fine and the next will separate a case or stick the brass. I also get wide variances in velocity as much as 200 fps from one shot to the next. This is while using smaller amounts of Lil'Gun than I have seen listed here. I have read that you can not get enough Lil'Gun in a case to cause an over pressure situation, but that has not been my experience. I have abandoned Lil'Gun for all my 22 Hornets and 221 Fireballs because of erratic pressure problems. Good Luck and Good Shooting

i'm no expert but i have a handi hornet, bought new in box, and haven't tried anything but 296...i have 3 firings on Rem brass, my first round of loads flattened primers consistently but i had no sticking case issues(polished the chamber with flitz per the faq's when it was new). I full length size the brass every loading and well, i'll be loading this stuff again cuz it's still in good shape. Try sizing your cases, it won't hurt and might fix things for you

My hornet is a 158  not a modern frame so it may not be applicable    but Im usint Lil Gun too ( switched from W296)  and I am getting  higher velocites ( by target varification not Chronographing  tillI get the D' Chrony fixed )   and I am not getting any stuck cases  I use Win Brass  I DO full length resize . I got  better groups  from Lil Gun too

My Hornet is also one of the older 158 models.  I've never full length sized a case for it, and have no problem chambering my reloads.  I do know my rifle has a slightly irregular chamber though, and I always load cases in the same orientation, (first letter of headstamp name up).

If you're having problems, you may just have to FL size your cases, but you could try putting the case back in the chamber in the same position each time.   From what you say, trying them all, culling the ones that stick, then finding more that stick when you try the "good ones" again, it sounds like a similar situation to my own rifle.
By the way, mine shoots very well, so I would say the chamber is not a problem for accuracy.

In any case, I doubt the trouble is with the brass.  I use mainly Remington, but also have WW, Prvi, and Hornady.  The only ones that do not make it more than six loads is the Hornady brand.
