Now I Can Join The Club
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:19:50 PM »
I bought a standard synthetic stock 20" bbl 243 today. I had a 7mm 08 in mind, but the price was right today,$200. I thought that the hammer extension was included if they didn't have iron sights, but not with this rifle. I  "needed'  something that will haul around on the ATV good, and this little baby looks like it will do the trick.

Loaded up some 58 gr Hornaday V maxes with 22 gr of Blue Dot. The rifle will wear a 6X scope and we'll be shooting these reduced loads at prairie dogs through the summer. Then I figure I will put a tiny 4X scope on and work up a deer - antelope load in the fall. As nice as this little gun handles, it may be doing a lot of my shooting .

Range report tomorrow.

If you bought it new the hammer extension should have been included.

Check the box it came in.  It should be in a small plastic envelope taped to an inside flap.  I almost threw one of mine out.

Checked the box over again, no extension. The rifle was on the shelf at the dealer and they put it back in the box, I suppose they lost it.

Range report in about 2 hrs after the sun comes up. I am anxious to try yet another Blue Dot load, because it seems like they always shoot pretty good. Right now I envision going kind of the opposite direction of most of the handi shooters. Instead of lots of barrels I'm thinking with a cartridge as versatile as the 243, with handloading I can do everything I would want with the one barrel.

It's the "handiness" of this little gun that made me take it home, it was love at first touch when I picked it up. The last handi I had was a more standard size and weight 223, and I never got very enthused about it.

Congrats on the new Superlight!! Give H&R a call and ask them to send you an extension since it didn't come one.  ;)

Shooting was a little disappointing this morn. My Blue Dot loads were a little hot, the primers were getting flat, and I don't like any signs of pressure with that fast of powder. Also the group was not great either. About 3". This is about the first time Blue Dot has let me down, usually it works first time every time. I'll shoot a string with 20 grains this afternoon

That is not that bad of a group for an out of the box H&R. I assume it was at 100 yds. I'd love to get that with the 243 i bought in december it still is not "broke in" yet. I haven't had the time to "hone" the barrel and try the stuff that there is in the FAQ. Check the FAQ and see about some of the things that you can fine tune a H&R with and let us know.

I won't shoot that load though with the primers flattening. I tried 20 gr this afternoon and had a vertical string maybe 6" long.

Out of the box, if you allow the Superlight barrel to get warm, accuracy will go out the window, I only shoot 3 shot groups, then let it cool, even then the 3rd shot will be high and well away from the first two. Work on the forend will help a lot, either FL or pillar bedding, read the Handi Basics 101.  ;) IIRC, Stimpy has a good 58gr Vmax load, maybe he'll share it with ya, his 100gr Speer load work great in mine, haven't tried the light bullets in either of my 243 Superlights yet.

Thanks Quick. I just may do some experimenting with the ability of the rifle to put the first shot in the same place. After all, it is a single shot.
