how do you stub a nef riffel?

Welcome! Stubbing isn't something anyone can do, it requires machine shop skills and equipment, it's covered in detail by Larry in the FAQs and Help sticky, a good place for all newbies to spend some time reading.  ;)

Check out the link in the FAQ Sticky at the top of this forum that covers it, but this is something best left to either professional gunsmiths or someone with a high degree of mechanical knowledge, lots of guts, and about a thousand bucks or more in special tooling or access to them. Many good rifles have been destroyed by kitchen table-hacksaw gunsmiths. I'm not saying it is impossible, just try to fully grasp all possibilities before starting such an undertaking, including all possible safety risks as well as monetary losses.

Also type "barrel stub" into Google and check out the first site about stubbing a handi and chambering into the .308 Be||m. And if you search through the old posts here, Trotterlg has made at least 3 or 4 very well illustrated posts on this subject that I have been studying.

Typically it is cutting the original barrel with the lug on the bottom down to just longer than the lug itself, then boring the "stub" out and tapping it. Now you can fit a barrel blank to the stub by turning and threading it to match the stub and screwing them together. After this is complete, you may chamber the barrel and set proper headspace.

This is done mainly to get a barrel not offered by the manufacture, or a higher quality barrel than the original.

Other methods shown by Larry (Trotterlg) involve cutting the barrel blank to match the internal profile of a 12 gauge barrel and using a nut to pull the two together. I think this method was found to be one of the quickest, as long as you were after a medium to light contour barrel.

For very low pressure pistol cartridges, epoxy or jb weld stubs have been made, but I'm sure Larry would disapprove of this method as much as he disapproves of paint, bake on finishes, glues, duct tape, and pop-sickle sticks being put on rifles.  ;D

 I didn't know I couldn't use duct tape. ::) ::) ::) How do you keep them together? ::) :o :o ;D

Your welcome! I just got my newest barrel blank in the mail yesterday for my next handi project. It will make my second barrel stub. This one will be done properly and is destined to become a 26" long either 38 special or .357 magnum, I haven't decided yet. It will be a long while before I finish it, but I'll be sure to take pictures along the way.

My first was a .45 ACP JB weld stub, but I'm still proving it out before I post any pictures on it.

The information found on this site is what inspired me to attempt these in the first place.
