New hunting partner need a rifle
« on: February 10, 2009, 04:01:56 AM »
Good morning GBO. This is my and many other go to source of information. I Have a friend Who is going to get in to hunting with me. I have never been hunting and will be getting my license first class I can attend. Now I have been Shooting a while. Mostly range or on some friends private property. SO i have this friend and just me his fiance is telling him he need a hobbie(are fiances are good friends so i was told to:)). I had already planned to start hunting and was telling my friend this. He jumped at the oppertunity to get the license with me. So not only do i get to explore the wonderful outdoors but i have a great friend to do it with. Now I have Shot guns and He is intrested in rifles(as am I but we will kinda share thes firearms.) So I am here asking for him on what would be a good choice of rifle. Our main game will be turkey and Deer. However the occasional waterfowl or what ever else we see. (we are getting all the permits.) I need good rifle suggestions for him. I think we have decided on a handi. He shoots my 12 Ga. with Remmy Magnum Buckshot 3" shot just fine. So recoil is not a big issue here. So please if you have a favorite Handi or somthing to reccomend it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks GBO

I'd go with the .308 first or the .30-30 second.

Well Deer is his main intrest. I am waiting for turkey season. So i think a slug gun would be good because its good in both states.. I have a shotgun for turkey so that is coverd. What would be a good slug gun reccomandation. Good to knowabout center fire rifles. What about rimfire?

Boy,

While i cant imagine being limited to only a shottie for deer hunting .. I will tell you that H&R has two different combo guns listed this year.. #1 is a 20 gauge rifled slug gun barrel with a matching 357 mag barrel ..
#2 is a 12 gauge rifled slug gun barrel and a 44 mag barrel .. These two barrel combos are both mated to the same reciever and that would allow you a good slug gun barrel for deer hunting and a good all around pistol caliber rifle option for plinking to... Well to what ever you do with the guns you cant hunt with there ..

Hope that helps you out a little , BTW i have the 44 mag /12ga. model and i love it  ;D

No centerfire rifles in ohio,,,,any caliber for deer. Just good ole shotgun slugs or primative or straight walled pistol with min barrel length(handgun-357 mag-44 mag ect) I use a 870 rem with 1 oz slugs with scope and a taurus M44 44 mag with 6  1/2 barrel and 2x6 simmons scope. Puts lots of venison in the freezer. Highland and Ross county.

Thank you ill look into that combo. However my 12.ga smooth bore handels slugs very nice. Could use a scope its already drilled and tapped to mines well get one. But at 75 yards with slugs i was dead on at the range last night. Couldnt test any farther because the range is indoor and only 75 yards.
