Reworking a handi stock.....
« on: February 09, 2009, 10:29:06 AM »
I have been working on my Maxi lately...  ;D

In that picture above, you can see how lo that comb is low in compairson to the center line of the barrel.

I had the scope reticule changed, I mounted up the scope with QRW lo rings. I mounted the barrel back on its original receiver. The orig stock was a reg model, not the best for scope use. I added a pallet wood USH stock. Although it is a Monte Carlo, the comb is still a bit too low to align my eye to the scope. Here is a picture showing the differences. The first picture has the Maxi stock in the front with the brown pachmayer shotgun pad. Second pic has the SideKick USH stock with the black factory pad.

So, my thinking is to raise the comb up to better support my facial alignment. I have flattened the top of the comb so I can epoxy an additional chunk of wood. Then rasp it into shape and finally refinish the stock as close as I can to the forend. Now I know you will see the difference between the pallet wood butt and the chunk of cherry I added. So I am not trying to hide it.

More to come. I gotta let the epoxy dry for at least 24 hours.  ::) ;D

Interesting CW, I am sure if you can't get it to stain up well Stimply has got something in electric blue or nuclear orange that'll work just fine. ;D

Keep up with the picture updates. The stock I am building right now is to accomodate my personal face and hand placement preferences on my Ultra Varmint 223. I have a substantial rise on my stock exactly where you added the extra piece of wood. I am interested in seeing how yours turns out.

Ditto Here! I've been considering giving this idea a go for several years.
I'd like to do one up raising the centerline of the butt as well, higher heel that is, and less toe.
A raised comb straight stock in other words.

Keep us posted CW!  ;)

The epoxy was good and hard by noon. So I started to chop away at the cherry.

I got the shaping done in a couple hours and started to sand...

Once that was done down to 320grit. I wet the stock and once dry hit it with "O" steel wool then finished up with "OOO".

I wanted to use specail walnut, but it was dried up so I have to use dark walnut. it will be OK. Maybe just a tad darker but we will see...

I really like how it came out. I could have spent more time re-shaping the grip and grip cap. but at the last moment I didn't bother... gotta let this dry and tomarrow starts the top coats!!

Nice.  Is there an advantage to having it higher like that or is it  just for looks?

Very nice CW, I really like the looks of your stock and bet it will definantly give you a more natural line-of-sight. Once again, great job.  ;D

CW

I like it , the Cherry gives a nice contrast to the palletwood but at the same time blends well with the darker grain below it .

What type Epoxy did you use to bond the two peices ? I have an old shotgun stock that I have been thinking about trying some diffrent things with just to see what works and what dosen't .

It is "hot " epoxy. (It gets really warm as it cures.)

The brand is from some golf club making kit I bought years ago. The stuff is incredibly strong. Its used to hold the driver heads on the shafts. So it can withstand incredible shock.

 Stimpy,
I have a couple as well and almost used one in-case it was a dud, I wouldn't have wasted a Monte Carlo stock. But It came out good and I'm happy.

BC Steve,
Yes, the advantage is good "cheek weld" to the stock for more stable shooting form.

I just ran down and rubbed on the first coat of linseed oil. Man does that ever make the wood beautiful!!! It gives it such depth. It is like looking at a liquid pool of wood!!! The color is a very close match to the walnut forend I did last week. That is just linseed on ray walnut. I'll have more pics as I get more finish coats on it.
