Slug gun receiver?
« on: February 07, 2009, 11:31:11 AM »
A guy at a gun show told me a 12 gauge slug gun uses the same recieve as a center fire rifle & could be factory fitted with a .22 Hornet barrel? I thought you could fit a .357 to the shot gun reviever, but not the Hornet. How do I tell the difference?

Well.. Yes and no.

No shotgun receivers and Rifle receivers are not the same. IMHO, they should be it would eliminate so many problems and only increase costs marginally. Yes the BARRELS will interchange. (For the most part) But it is not advisable to put and fire a CF rifle barrel on a shotgun receiver.

Shotgun receivers (SB1) have had a larger firing pin. Some of these new 357 and 44 Mag handis are on a shotgun receiver (Also SB1s) but have smaller firing pins. So its a bit convoluted. In short, no, I do not believe you can get a 22H barrel fitted to a 12Ga receiver.

IMHO, it would be completely safe, but I do not believe that Remington will do it.

Evidently Remington is fitting 44 and 357 to sb1 frames but no other centerfire barrels

One more fact.....the SB2 slug gun frame can't be fitted with a rifle barrel due to the difference in the barrel size, the 10ga and slug gun barrel swell is ~.100" larger than regular shotgun and rifle barrels, the opening in the frame is larger to accommodate the larger barrel, but the outside frame dimension is the same as the SB1 and SB2 rifle frame making the side walls of the frame much thinner. That's on top of the firing pin difference that CW mentioned.

Thanks, I don't think he was trying to mislead me. I think he was just confused. If he would have had a .30/30 I would have considered it, but I have no use for a slug gun.
Thanks.

i keep hearing you guys say the firing pin is smaller in the new SB1 357 & 44 mag receivers , i don't see it ?
the casing on the left is from my shotgun receiver i sent to the factory and had a 357 barrel fitted to, and the one on the right is from my new 357 combo i just bought a month ago. i can't tell the difference in the dents in the primer. my 44 mag combo makes the same size dent in its primer also. ???

I was wondering about that, Swampman said his SB1 357mag had a smaller firing pin than an SB1 shotgun frame, but H&R has since started fitting SB1 frames made since 1987 with 357 and 44mag barrels, so maybe they determined that the smaller firing pin isn't necessary for them. But I do know I've had pierced primers using Dan Wesson factory ammo on my 357maximum barrel when I tried it on my SB1 Topper frame 4yrs ago, but the same ammo worked fine when the barrel was on an SB2 frame. The SB1 Topper frame works great with a TDC barrel as a turkey gun now, so there's nothing wrong with the frame that I can see, the only difference is the firing pin is bigger than an SB2 rifle firing pin, and the hole in the breech face is bigger as well.

Tim

It came today, and it's a great looking little gun.  I was hoping my 20 gauge youth barrel would fit it, but it was a little too loose.  The Monte Carlo synthetic stock is the nicest I've ever seen, but I have an Ultra laminated/checkered stock that I'm probably going to use.  The barrel is marked SB2 but the receiver is marked .357 Mag .44 Mag and shotgun barrels only.  It does have the small dia. firing pin.  I have a Simmons 3-9X40 and a Simmons 3-9X32.  I will use one or the other.

I wouldn't be too afraid to use other low pressure barrels on this receiver, but that's just me.

Bud's came through for me, and I'm very pleased.

yeah Tim,
i've shot hundreds of rounds through the gun i had the factory fit the 357 barrel too, with no primer problems at all . when i bought the two combo's (44 & 357) last month, i was expecting the smaller firing pin, but it had the same pin as my NEF 12 guage receiver. ;)

Both cartridges geerate under the 40,000 cup threshold. So they may not have the ability to allow the primers to "flow" into the larger firing pin hole.

I have seen at least two with the small firing pins. Both where 357 mag rifles.
