What scope for Remington 750 carbine?
« on: February 06, 2009, 03:50:51 AM »
As I have solved the feeding problems with my 750 carbine, and it took so long to figure it out, the original 2x7 Leupold varix-1 now lives on another rifle(my new Ruger Compact Magnum in .338 R.C.M.), and now I need a new scope. I liked the Leupold but I think I want something that will be better for close range, fast shooting. Something with a large field of view, clear optics, good low light performance, light weight, and above all dependable. This rifle is going to be one of my "big woods" rifles. I hunt the high peaks region of the adirondacks, and mostly still hunt. The shots won't be long, but they may come very quick. I have thought about the old Leupold m-8 3 power, leupold vari-x3 1.75x6,leupold vari-x3 1x5, or the weaver grand slam 1.5x5. I don't have any experience with any of these scopes. I do have a Leupold vari-x3 2.5x8 and the optics are great, although the scope is a little large for what I'm looking for.

I have a vari-x 3  1.75x6 on my 7600 pump carbine and I wouldn't own anything else on my woods gun :)

I have used the Leupold VX-I 1-4x 20mm scope with great success on my Ruger Deerfield, Mini-30 and Browning BAR. I prefer the 2x setting in the heavy woods in which I hunt.
BTW; Congratulations on your success in correcting the functional problem that your 750 Carbine had. I am surprised by Remington's inability and/or unwillingness to correct the issue.

I have a Bushnell 3200 firefly 3 -9 on my .308 7400.  It works well.  For normal hunting in Upstate New York, I set it at a magnification of 4.  One shot one black bear.

Nothing more than a 2x - 7x.  This model covers situations out to 300 yds., which is the exception I think. If you hunt the heavy woods you'll always be down at the low end settings.

Go with the K.I.S.S. principle and get a fixed 4X; scope brand choice is yours. You'll be set for anything from point-blank to 300+ yards. Unlike with a variable power scope, you won't be bothered with having to fiddle around with the power change ring. My primary deer rifle for here in northcentral PA is a Remington 721 in 270 Winchester and I have a vintage Redfield 4X on it. In the areas I hunt, you can be in a swamp one minute, then quickly be in a situation to where a 300 yard shot is a possibility. The straight 4X will handle it! I have taken deer in both extremes with that rifle/scope combination with no problem!

I recommend a Leupold Vari-X II, in 2 x 7.  A remarkably light, compact, effective scope.  And, you can find them used, in excellent condition, at gunshows, for about $150.

I am in a similar situation in re-scoping my 750 Whelen for a marsh that I am hunting whitetails in over the last couple seasons.  Scope that has caught my eye is the Nikon Omega or Slughunter. These things have 5" of eye relief, and are available in 1.65x5 power range.
They are designed for working within 150 yards, which cover my conditions pretty well. finally, they seem to have built a decent reputation for reliability.
Did I mention the 5" eye relief?
Something I am thinking about, so food for thought. ???

I finally decided on a Leupold Vari x-III 1.5-5. The cheapest I could find new was $350, so I started shopping on ebay. I finally won one for $260. It is a used scope but has no blemishes at all. And with Leupolds lifetime warranty I felt comfortable buying one used. I mounted it with Warne one piece mounts and low rings, and boy, what a good looking rig. I took the open sights off and filled the screw holes with dummy screws. That scope has such a wide field of view the front sight was too prominent in the sight picture. This should make one fine big woods rig.

I have an M7600 .30-06 carbine.  I hunt NE VT and mostly stillhunt or track.  The rifle is two seasons old.  First season it wore a Nikon 2x7.  My one chance at a buck came at about 15 yards when I jumped it and a doe from their beds.  Never was able to get him in the scope as he ran off.....
Second season was last fall.  Based on the prior year it now had a Pentax 30mm red dot on it.  2nd day of rifle season I shot a 4 pt buck at 20 paces.  Due to having no magnification, however, I could easily have not gotten a chance at him had he not been foolish enough to stand still as long as he did.
So, based on the above, I now have a new Weaver V3 Classic 1x3 waiting to be mounted.  I think this scope will bridge the gap between the two scenarios above.....that's my hope anyways.

I put a Leupold II 1-4x20 on my Remington 750 .308 carbine after I get rid of Leupold 2-7x33mm because it doesnt give me wide of view thats why I can't find deer in the woods.

What did you find solved the feeding problem?  Please let me know! Shot mine for the first time yesterday and got a few jams as it went to cycle in the new round.  It was ejecting the empties fine.  Going to clean the action spring and tube tonight.

I stole the Bushy 4X off the wife's Marlin 357 mag.   Now that she knows I have to go find another scope!   Probably get myself another 3X9 for it! ;)

I am in aggrement with several others here about the 4x scope ,I like the Leupold 4x in either the older M-8 or the newer FX II with duplex reticle. Just fine at 20 yards and works great at 300 plus yards as well.
Tough as nails ,lightweight, backed by a great warranty, relatively inexpensive.

Weaver K4  4X38.  I think the K4 is everybit as good as the Leupold Var X II series with a lot smaller price tag.
A sponsor here Mid something has them and for well under $200 last time I checked.  Look inthe sponsor headers and if you see a Mid, that's it.
I used to say Leupold Var X II for rifles and now I say Weaver K or V series.
Another one to look at is the V7  2.5-7X33mm  Good compact scope with a wide clear view.
Good luck.

I'm a big fan of the Leupold M8, 3x riflescopes and own about a dozen of them. IMO they are the finest woods riflescope ever made.  ;)  And for open country the M8-6x is a real beauty.......... :o

The fixed power Leupolds are so expensive I avoid thm unless I can find a used one.  I really can't see the point unless you're just trying to save 2 ounces of weight.
