Hammer Problem: Transfer Bar Issue?? Broken??
« on: February 05, 2009, 05:08:20 PM »
So I was out shooting my .223 (varmit stock with fluted barrel) and things were going
great..........until.............

I pulled the trigger, no fire. I pulled the round out and there was not a firing pin indent.
So I start checking out how the hammer was falling and it's not hitting the firing pin or whatever,
it should be. It's falls about an 1/8" short of its normal resting point. I
can see a long rectangular piece (transfer bar???) laying on the hammer in side the reciever. It was obvisously a
loose part and shouldn't have been were it was. I sorta wiggled it around and it dissappeared it the
reciever. That was the end of the range trip.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
What can I do? I know I have to start digging, but what should I look for?
Any links on how to and what the trigger group should look like?

Thanks for any and all help.

Scott

See Broken Transfer Bar in the FAQs and Help sticky, you can order a new one and a spare from Brownell's or send the rifle into H&R for repair. Download Perklo's trigger hone info from the link in the FAQs also if you want to fix it yourself, it shows complete R&R of the trigger group.

This happened to me two weeks ago.
I pulled mine apart and was able to fix (southern engineer) the transfer bar.

I was nervous about taking the gun apart, but if you follow the instructions, it is really easy.  pay attention to the part about making a slave pin for re-assmbly.  It can be done without a slave pin... but you will be yelling explicit words  ;D

I also ordered the replacement part from Brownells, because I know my "fix" will fail at some point.
While you are in there, might as well do a trigger job :)

my hornet came NIB with a bad transfer bar...the pivot between the transfer bar and lifter was so loose that if you elevated the bore(as if you were shooting uphill) the transfer bar would flop straight back toward the hammer, blocking the hammer from coming forward.the part i bought from brownell's was a much higher quality than the one that came in the gun new....

Too common sometimes, the transfer bar is one of the recommended spare parts to have on hand, just in case. I'll tell ya though, in my experience, once you have spare parts for something, you may never need it, I've yet to have to replace one, probably cuz I have a spare!! ::) ;D Murphy usually only strikes when your defenses are down!! :-\ I've had a spare for my utility trailer, both boat trailers and my travel trailer, never had a flat on any of them in the last 20-30yrs!! But you can bet your life if I forget the spare or it goes flat, I'd get a flat for sure!! ???

Mine fell apart about a week ago went to FAQ and found the info I needed. I was lucky I found all the parts inside the recever. Now the only problem I have is the barrel release is verry stif to operate, you can still open the barrel but something is not right any help would be great.

Either the barrel release isn't installed right or the latch spring isn't installed right.

What are the other parts can you give me a short list? Where do you buy these parts? Brownells?

Hey Tim,

I went to Brownells and looked for any part with the title "transfer bar" and could not find anything.

Here is the link: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/schematics/schemmfg.aspx?schemid=676&m=6&mn=H&model=SB2+Handi-Rifle%2fH%26R+Ultra+

Could you please help a fella out some more?

Thanks for any and all help

Thank you Tim and Troy and everyone. I tried to download the "thingy" in the sticky section, but it didn't work out for me........thats why I couldn't investigate the parts I needed further. I'm not that lazy.

Anyhow, I'm gonna try and figure out what I did wrong with the download.

Again, thanks a bunch guys.

Sounds like someone might be blessed with a slow dialup connection like me.  It took about 10-15 minutes just for part one...
Got it saved now on disc.

Here is a breakdown for the pardner, I believe most of the parts interchange with the exception of the firing pin.
