Questor- I sure am pumped.  A fella in the elevator the other day lamented that summer was just about over and that after next weekend we would be into September - I remarked that was great, as it brings us one month closer to huntin' season.  

I'm hoping to hunt a few different areas this year - I want to try some northern zone hunting where I can put some of my rifles to work.  I have a bunch of them almost all set up to rock and roll and bambi, plus anything else that is large enough to be edible and legal to take is on the list.  

There is a place my brother hunts that is in rifle country and some of the shots can be long ones - perfect for my 6.5 or 303, er 06.  A friend hunts the heavily wooded northern regions and those areas are just right for any of my Winchester Big Bores or a mil-surp 8mm.  Southern zones are reserved for the 12 guage and 44 or 357.  

I'm busy at the loading bench every evening and trying to hit the range for last minute sight-ins, 'cause Mikey be pumped for this huntin' season.  Yeah!

Better get that sighting in done soon. We had the first instance of "full range" last Sunday morning.  I just turned around and went home.

You mean you guys don't have your own range in your back yard like me? Dang I thought every one did.  :-D  My range is full only if I'm there.

Graybeard - some guys have all the luck.  Questor and I, and I'm sure far too many others, know what it means to have to squeak time at the range.  More often than not however I find myself spending time talking with others, helping them sight-in or waiting for some fool who doesn't know what he's doing to clear out.  

I do have a range, of sorts, availalbe.  It's an unused landing strip on some property I own and it's a full 1000 meters in length.  But the neighbor pastures his cattle there until Oct. 1 and I don't think either he or his cattle would appreciate boolets zingin' over their heads and the resultant stampede it would cause (tee hee and giggle - don't give me any ideas here fellas).  It would make a wonderful range and I would love to shoot long range again but there is just something about goin' prone into the cowpie that crosses my eyes and makes it tough to shoot straight.  Actually, it is great for long range coyote during the winter when you can see them skulking around the woodline 4 or 500 yds away.  This be Mikey.

Yep, I'm pumped.

I didn't draw anything here, but the bear season opened last Friday and it's over the counter.  I haven't been able to get away yet because of some college classes, but a week from today I'm headed to the hills.

Talked to my dad last night when he got back from looking for cows on a friends ranch about 5 hours north of here.  They went down one canyon known to hold a lot of bears.  The cow dogs (catahoulas) jumped 3 bears but didn't stick with them long enough to tree them.  Then on the way back up the canyon they saw two more; one was about 125 lbs so kind of small, but the other was guessed at 350+ and was seen twice in the last week in almost the same place......a marshy spring fed wallow a couple hundred yards from the line shack.  Get this, the rancher's brother-in-law shot at it twice last Sunday with a 30-30 and missed, then the bear was back in the same place on Tuesday morning!

Hmm...just might have to shoot that one next week if he's still there.  Dad may try to call it in with a predator call in the next day or so, but if he doesn't get it then we'll put it up a tree with some good bear dogs.

Sure am. Dove on Monday is always a big deal here on the farm. Will have almost 200 shooters  (125 first round with 62 waiting to fill in as limits are done). Bow whitetail starts middle of month, then, BP and right into general season. Lost out on a Maine blackbear hunt 'caues the outfitter went under and is MIA, no money involved (won hunt on the internet) for me but I know a few looking for him with a rope.  Was able to reschedule the feral cattle hunt is S. TX with older brother. I had bagged off in order to go the Maine, can't work out anything with younger brother in OR for elk (again begged off the go the Maine) so I guess I'll go here in NC for a BIG PIGGIE looking for something 350+, have a 338 but really want something BIGGGGGGGGGG :eek: . I need the try out the bear gun on something worthy of a .411JDJ Contender. I have decided to open the farm to a few hunter safety class standouts this year. Just waiting for the names to be submitted then will draw 5 out of the hat. Only requirement is that the instructor submit the name.So this season is very full and I'm as always looking forward to every day of it. Almost forgot have a brand spanking new black female Lad pup just got her on 16AUG. :-D

I am so ready for the seasons to open! Monday is the dove opener, later that week I take my Dad mule deer hunting in the "A" zone in central Calif. After that I go to X9A zone mule deer hunt near Bishop, Calif, Nov. is my first muzzleloader elk hunt in Az, and Dec. I go after Coues whitetail in Az! I don't know if I'm going to be able to fit in my favorite quail hunt this year. I'm gonna be busy, I can't believe that I got drawn for all these hunts! I must be living right! Mike

MF, what unit will you be hunting coues deer in?  I live right in the middle of some of the best coues deer country Arizona has to offer.  The rut usually hits during that late hunt so it's a good time to go after coues deer.

Yep! Getting the Encore tuned in (and me too) been practicing every chance I can from my back yard range. Checked out about 4 nice legal bucks the other night, the doves are flocking a little bit, my dog is getting antcy now just have to get the field work done before season opens.

I have the 300 Weatherby load worked up and sighted in.  Ready for my Ontario Moose hunt.  This will be my first, it is exciting because my Father-in-law is my partner.  At 79 it is possibly his last.  He has had easily 50 trips to Canada hunting and fishing.  Our hunt is a Fly-in 7 day event in the most beautiful country this side of heaven.  I have been to this area twice before for fly-in fishing trips, only problem is it ruined me for fishing in my home state (Indiana).

My 44 mag SRH is ready with load and waiting for my Red dot scope to be returned under warranty.

My Encore 15inch, 25-06 is ready for another season as well.

I will be squirell hunting this weedend.

You bet I'm getting pumped!

I started yesterday morning! I went out with my 45 colt and shot a decent buck antelope. This was an early pistol/muzzleloader hunt.

I've got 2 doe antelope to get in sept. Also cow elk and bear starts the first of sept. Oct it's deer and elk.

I'll be hunting Coues in unit 21. My first choice would have been unit 36c but my hunting buddy talked me into 21 because the draw odds were better. I'll settle for what I got. :grin: Mike
