Barrel fitting and accuracy

While I'm enjoying the 45-120 ream thread, I decide to do what I didn't want to do.  I purchased a 25-06 barrel on here and decided if it didn't fit one of my remaining frames I'd resale....well it didn't fit real good on one and another it was way too big.  What I didn't want to do is fit it and then be stuck with it....well I tried to make it work on one frame that was almost latching up,but I noticed some side to side play.  thought I could square it but in the process, made a loose fit to that frame.  I got a shorter frame and now I'm committed so after 2 hrs of filing and checking filing and checking my thumbs are killing me.  I have it locking up tight, latch is showing even engagement, but according to Handi faqs is still too tight on feeler gauge, and barrel release is almost in the right position.  I tried popping open the action over my knee,...and  well... all I got is a bruised knee ::).  So it is locking tight.  Enough,... I shall soon see.  I am going to fire it at least ten times, unless it pops open and check accuracy and such.  If it is so so, I will try to fit some more and then refire for accuracy again.  I just don't want to make this barrel loose on my shortest frame, cause then its back to shimming or something....

Not sure if this has been done before but I'll give it a try.

I did get it squared up at the lug pretty good.  Not any play at all, and this is another reason I'd like to fire it and see.  Factory round was completly flush with breech end so I couldnt do any work at that end to begin with.  Wish I could have.  That is the easiest part to fit. IMHO.

Tim,  would you suggest I do this with or without a forearm to eliminate that possibility for throwing shots?

I'll get back to shooting weather permitting next week.

Cummon Jerry!   ::)  Isn't your sense of accomplishment worth a sore thumb?   ;D  Kinda like me having to ream my own rifle barrel since you didn't sell me yours!   ;) :D

Too tight on a feeler gauge??  ??? The .002" is just a maximum, there's no too tight as long as it locks up good, I like them to be tight, a good one will lock up good even on aluminum foil which is well under .001" thick!! ;D So if it locks up good and tight with good latch engagement, shoot it!!  ;)

Thats 2 sore thumbs and a bruised knee!  And you know I would of sold you that barrel, but was trying to follow rules of sale here ;D ;D ;D  believe me I wished I still had it....at least till I see the boys riding on their quad.  I'm sure another is in my future ::).

It was getting late and I was tired...yes... "too tight on feeler gauge"...even in the morning I'm still trying to figure out my thought on this one myself...

Oh I'm getting it now.  Its if I file toooo much then it will begin to add headspace and the smallest gauge(mine is.0015) will then be able to start to pull out.  And if I go even farther than a .002 will pull out and so on and so forth.  I had that backwards for some reason.  I knowd better. Guess being a left handed pollock is showing this week :D  Probablly why I show signs of ambidexterity. LOL

Going to load up some rounds.

Ah HA!  That explains it!  I wouldn't worry about it Jerry.  I have found...  and I'm sure Pete will back me up on this... that working late at night on fitting handi barrels causes this malady!  The reason is unknown though some have insinuated that constantly refreshing the supply of shim material on hand for the project may contribute to these symptoms... :-\

Richard, I think you need to sit your butt down, make a bunch of shims, and get that reamer rolling.  Boy, you're procrastinating :D :D  By the time you get that reamer back, at this rate, you'll owe them a grand.  Suck up some liquid courage and git it goin.  Ma used to say "An idle mind's the devils workshop".  I can't just sit out here in the alfalfa and snow, waitin for yer ballistic body to show up.  P.M. me when yer gittin ready ta shoot sos I don't have to sit out there and freeze.  Patty'll be there too....she's good with injun remedys you'll need. ;D

I got really lucky, that barrel I got from you locked up like a dream on my BC.

Hopefully, the 25-06 will shoot well for you!

I was fixin to do that rite now!  But...   :-[  My FFL just let me know my Ruger SBH Bisley Hunter is in!   ;D  So Ima gonna go pick it up!  Then, when I get home I'll have to fondle it for a while.  'course I like to make maximum use of my time so I'll also be replenishing my shim stock.   ::)  By the time I get ready to ream I'll be seein 2 barrels where there ought to only be one!   :D

Oh...shimming material... :D :D :D  I really need to stop using SODA cans for mine.  Might make the work a little more bearable.  Shoot this stuff is fun even when you don't want to do it!!

These glass bottles I have in front on me make terrible shims.  On a serious note your release lever should have a little slack in it when the barrel is locked up completely.  I had some that would close but the release lever was tight.  A little fitting cured that and allowed the gun to lock up all the way.

Yes I follow you...that is close to where I am.  I know it could be fit somemore, and this is why I'm wanting to try this little experiment.

WoW!  Here is the proof.  Had initial 4" groups at 50yds.  barrel locked up but not completly. After some initial fitting shot 1 3/8" at that point before I shot I thought I was good except the latch was not coming up far.  Good latch engagement, at least I thought.  Then finally a little more fitting of the lug marking with sharpie marker then taking only the layer off evenly, then repeating process  until I noticed a small increase in the amount the latch raised after lockup.  Shelf showed slight uneven lockup so I lightly honed the high spot and made even.  This allowed the latch to close just a bit more.  At this point I didn't want to remove anymore before shooting SO to THe range I went.  It is now .24"center to center at 50 yds and three shot group.  I will stop here.  The proof is also in them FAQS read em!  They are great.

Guess I'll have to keep this one afterall!

I forgot to mention the load I was shooting for this.  I figured I'd use a good factory load instead of possibly interjecting some error with an unproven hand load.  I use Hornady 117 gr BTSP factory ammo for this.  I think Tim said this shot good out of his.  Maybe it was just the bullet.  So I went with it.

And that lower target is an honest 3 shot group.  I know it only looks like two holes. :)  The third nearly center-punched the other two and slightly to right of their connection point.

 I was using a 4x Swift scope and weaver rings.The forearm I used through out is from the ATI adjustable stock set. Very wide barrel channel.  I sanded the channel out some more to remove material at the tip that was making contact.  Also used an o-ring. The stock is a syn monte.

Yup!!

Same ammo Jerry, I've got some handloads for mine, but never shot them yet, the Hornady ammo shoots so good!! It would've made the antelope hunt with me last fall, but that didn't happen. :-\ The Federal 115gr partition load shoots almost identical to it.
