Magtech Ammo for 44 mag- Anyone tried this?
« on: January 28, 2009, 04:09:52 PM »
Hi all,
Am in process of gathering some ammo to try out new 44 mag handi just picked few days ago. I am getting Hornady Leverevolution, Fiocchi 240 grain JSP, and am considering trying out Magtech 240 grain JSP as well. Not sure if anyone has tried the Magtech ammo in these or not, if no one gives me any negatives, I will give it a go and report back. I am told by several that the Leverevolution and the Fiocchi seem to shoot quite well in these in general. Thanks.

Mark

My Handi shoots it great. Also it shoots good in my Smith & Wesson revolver.

My Handi shoots it great. Also it shoots good in my Smith & Wesson revolver.

I sighted in my Handi .357 at 60 yards with Magtech 158 gr. JSPs, and it made one ragged hole.  They shoot very well in my Blackhawk also.  I buy them when I find them.  I don't own a .44 (yet) so I can only relate my experience with the .357.

I wouldn't hunt with it.  My cousin shot a deer about 2 years ago with it.  The bullet failed 2 penetrate the shoulder at 30 yards on 2 shots and this was out of a rifle.  He finally got the deer with a 3rd shot to the neck.

I'll bet he was shooting the 180HP's NOT the 240Sp's...  My buddie who loads and shoot 180's in his 44 has shot a deer with them and they where like a grenade, shallow penetration and fragments everywhere!! If he hadn't hit him between the ribs he too would not have gotten that deer.

JMHO, but hollow point bullets in rifle fired pistol rounds, have no business in the deer woods.

Thanks all for your inputs. I am going to try them. They are not hollow points they are JSP's. I would agree with CW, I don't believe I would try a hollow point on deer, although I am sure many have been killed with them. It is big bullet already I would rather ensure the penetration than to get the expansion, or worse bullet and jacket separation. I would have to say that the JSP would also expand some, after all is is not an FMJ. Did I say I can't wait to shoot this thing??!!

I have shot the Magtech out of my Super Blackhawk, and it shot well enough.  I will say this though, it made about a 3 foot ball of flame come out the barrel and around the cylinder.  It shocked me a bit, so I tried some of the other ammo I had brought with me, (Federal) and got a MUCH smaller flame.  The Magtech caused a HUGE fireball.

I use nothing but 240 JHPs on deer in the .44 mag. Have killed a slew of them with those and have yet to fail to get an exit or to lose a deer shot with them. Anyone telling me they have causes me to question bullet placement.

My Handi doesn't like my Magtech reloads but my Ruger Deerfield loves them.  The Handi prefers anything Hornady XTP wise over H110 or OT cast over Trail Boss.  One extream or the other it seems.

They were 240gr soft points.  The bullet was slightly mushroomed and in the shoulder.  At 30 yards I would expected more penetration.  I don't think the bullets are loaded very hot to begin.

Shot a 200 pound 8 pointer last year with a taurus 44 mag 6 inch with 240 grain soft point and dropped in its tracks. Placement was mid shoulder and took out shoulder/lungs/heart and was under the skin on the other side mushroomed. Was about 40 yards scoped.  23.8 grains h110 and cci mag primers and magtech bullet and starline case. Great combo.

Wow, I'm very surprised Stump!!  You must be right.. lite loads for sure!!

Reminds me of a pig hunt some years back. We go to talking about calibres and what each of us was shooting. The guys we where talking to both had 44's one redhawk and some other. I remember cause my buddie had just bought a Redhawk in 45Colt at my coaxing. I was shooting my Bisley in 45 Colt. Our load was the same. My handloaded 300Gr SP @ almost 1300fps from the 7.5" barrel. Any how, both of these guys described bullet proof boars!!  They each had multiple shots on there animals. One of the guy even had to finish his with a borrowed deer rifle, caliber unknown. They strongly advised against our "cowboy" guns. Well, I wasn't worried as I've found many people cannot shoot handguns that well. Even fewer do it well under pressure. My buddies was the first bang flop w/a handgun I have witnessed on a big boar. Mine was one shot but more typical. Bang, stagger, stagger, walk, stagger, flop.  ;D  These guys stopped "advising" us on caliber.  ::)
