I prepped some FTX bullets...

I prepped 100 45C cases today for some FTX bullets. I used some purty virgin nickle Rem/Peters cases. ;D ;)

 I forgot that the 250Gr FTX's don't have canalures. I guess that they where designed for the 45 SoCom. Being its an auto it must taper crimp. Anyway, I mounted my C&H canalure tool and calculated where I wanted the canalure. All of these weigh 250Gr.



I put it on so the bullet is only in the case about as far as a 200Gr would seat. I checked my gages and the chamber on the handi. Now this will never work in my revolvers or levers. its strictly a SS proposition. here is a couple pics:



The tool works very nice and easy. Just a bit of pressure and turn the crank. I took a little video of it in operation.




Tomarow, I'll finish the canalures and charge and seat all the bullets.

458 Socom is .458, your thinking of the 450 Bushmaster .452.

I might have to get a box of these to try out in my 454 Ruger.

That C&H tool makes a very nice looking cannelure.

Can the tool be used for all calibers?
Do you have to buy caliber specific accessories?

 I have only used it for 357 (9mm) & 45. But the size and diameter is adjusted with a screw thread. So I'm guessing that any caliber could be made to work pretty easily. It works nicely and is infinitely adjustable.

Looking good so far CW.....let us know what the final LOA is of the cartridge withthe FTX finished.

I think you've found the plus side to your heart attack.  You are keeping us looking for more.  Keep it up buddy, but take care too!
Maybe you've found another calling.  I think there's lots of room in some of those shooting and reloading mags for some of your stuff!

 Good catch, your right, I didn't think about the 458/452 differences between those two.

 Anyhow, I need to look up the velocities as I think the 450 Bushmaster is a bit faster than what I load the L.Colt to. So not sure about bullet pref. That's even assuming that this bullet was expressly made for the bushmaster's velocity's... OR is it the same as the muzzle loaders bullets? I have a bunch of 300Gr muzzleloader bullets and they are IDENTICLE to the FTX. Even the tip is the same flexable material. I'll snap some pics and post later for you to see. I will need to load some tests when I get better and see what happens.

 Heading down again later this morning, aft AM news, oatmeal, fruit and coffee!  ;D ::)

The 250gr FTX is made for the 450 Bushmaster, the 200gr is made for the 460S&W.  ;) I'll be working with the 200gr .452" in my 460S&W Handi, the factory ammo does almost 2900fps in a rifle, dunno how well it's gonna hold up at that velocity tho, they rate the ammo at 2200fps from an 8-3/8" barrel.

  WELL THEN...  >:(That's not so cool... Thanks for that tidbit there Tim!!! I have a chance at the bushmaster velocity's.. but scratch the 200@ 2900fps!!!  No I am not going to re-chamber to the 460... would consider the Cassul...

 I got all the bullets canalured and 20 loaded with varying loads of H110. All .3tenths appart.

   They are right @ 1.90". That's .30 over OAL for this cartridge, it chambers perfectly in the H&R. That is still off the rifling by a bunch.

Hey CW have you slugged your 500 barrel to see what the actual diameter is? I'm wondering if it would help if I could buy some cast bullets that are a little larger like maybe .502- .503's although you would think the lead bullets would deform enough to take proper shape, especially with a gas check?

 Well we shall see...

 I'm a bit worried about this bullets construction. I haven't checked the ballistics of the 450 Bushmaster, but I'm thinking its above what I want to get with the 45 colt. I'm sure I can safely get to 1900. But don't feel comfortable pushing it more. I know the gun will take the 454 and Tim has one in 460 both well surpass the long colts pressures even in the hi pressure loads. So in my mind I know it will hold up....

 Gotta dig out some old shooting times as I remember multiple stories on these calibers in the "black guns" for a couple years back.

 Not the 500 I haven't no.  BUT so far my best consistant loads have come form 5744 powder, stepping back from starting loads and a 440lead WNGC Bullet. So you may very well be on to something.

 Oh BTW the word your looking for is obdurate, a bullet increasing diameters to fill/seal the bore. You right the GC will abscure it some as will the overall hardness of the bullet your shooting.

Close!! Actually the word is obturate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obturate

I've slugged my .500, bore is .5015" in the groove, then I measured both bags of my 385gr Remington Bonded Core-lokts and loaded up those that were on the fat side hoping it would make a difference, just need a nice Sunday for a range trip. :-\

Our spell checker changed my spelling!!!  >:(  ;) I know because it tried to change yours when I went to ck spelling as well!!!  Oh well, we all knew what we where talking about anyhoo.  ;D

 I have shout a hand full of them 385's and didn't see any difference from the other jacketed bullets I have shot. Nothing atrocious. But not as good as the 440gr lead and 5744.

I just ordered my first cast bullets for my gun the 440gr WFNGC LBT from Graf's. I'm hoping that this is going to solve some of my problems with my lack of accuracy!  Thanks guys for the input.
