45 acp
« on: January 28, 2009, 08:57:33 AM »
How would a fellow go about getting one made for a handi-rifle?  Is there a factory chambering that could be easily converted? I'd really like to have one with about an 18" barrel.

Other than reboring an existing barrel like a 22 hornet, a stubbed barrel is the only other choice, see stubbing in the FAQs and Help sticky. Either way will cost $300 or so plus the cost of the original barrel(s) and/or donor barrel. If someone made a chamber adapter for a 45 Colt chamber, it may work tho.

just  a  wild  idea  with no bases  in fact  or experience:

45 long colt barrel  to start

recut the rim groove  for  45 acp RIM

then rather  than  the  ''moon'' clips ...just use  e-clips

if  you know anyone with  a smith 625 in acp ask them to try  some e-clips

just  an  isea  and should be cheap enough

The 45 ACP has a smaller rim than the Colt, so that wouldn't work.

use  the  e-clips  rather  than  a moon  clip
they  will  head space there on  the  e-cplip not on the case mouth
like on  the mod 625
  and   1917 colts

the finish product won't be as nice as a stub  but much cheaper

Might start with a Marlin 45 ACP barrel from Numrich:

I have one just as you describe. Mine has a nice beadblasted SS barrel made to my specs after much discussion with the gunsmith. It was stubbed into a 20 gauge barrel and I asked the chamber area remain blue and I think it is quite a good looking gun. The forearm has been epoxy bedded to fit the barrel perfectly and my thoughts have been about obtaining some .45 Super brass and loading some .45 Supers for it. I am sure this fine .45 ACP Handi  can take anything the .45 Super can dish out. It is a real joy to shoot with all types of .45 ACP ammo....<><....:)

There is another rimmed 45 out there... It called the 45 AUTORIM. But its rim is very thick and would need custom rim cut to shoot them in a handi ACP chamber.

Now that might be a neat handi.. of coarse it would do nothing for someone with an abundance of 45ACP's to use up.  I used to shoot them in a old M25 I had and STUPIDLY sold...

like  i  said 45 auto rim
the  rim  is as thick  as a 45 acp with an e -clip on  it  or a moon clip

just re-cut  the rim area  of a 45 colt chamber

I didn't catch that you said auto rim case... I'm getting tired.  ::)
That whole "e" clip thing on the acp case threw me. I didn't really understand where you where going with it. Now I see... said the blind man to his deaf wife.... ;D ;)

Good ideas... I like the thought of the marlin barrel into a stub. If only I'da kept my camp carbine, I wouldn't be wanting a 45acp handi, mabye.  Yours sounds nice there MSP ret. If I would get one built I'd want to stay away from using auto-rim or moon clips, just a regular old acp for me.

the e-clip  45 auto rim  might be a do it youself thing

i think my next choice  wold be re bore and re chamber and shorten  to  16inches
any other smaller bore/chamber

WOW!  I just found this thread and read the barrel stubbing article in the FAQs.  I have been considering something along these lines and now that I see that it has been done my confidence is boosted to go for it.  I may get the auto pistol caliber barrels I've been wanting yet....

I really like my Lil Camp Carbine in 45!!  I have modified it a bit. I shortened the mag housing and picked up 5 of the short lived AMT 5 round mags. It makes for a perfect little mag for this rifle!!. I also stripped and painted the stock with truck bedliner for a non slip, black finish. Is scoped with a shortie tactile, lighted reticule 4X scope.

Its even accounted for two deer with 185gr Remington Golder sabers in +P!! Both shot at very close, "tactile" ranges at the base of the neck. Both bang flop, Thur and thru penetrations.

I agree with CW, a Handi in (or Camp Carbine) in .45 ACP is a great gun. And by the way, for anyone considering a .45 ACP Handi similar to mine, the ejector/extractor (mine is an ejector) is a simple matter, just use a 30-06 ejector and fit the barrel lug with a lifter button, a very easy job. Many years ago I made some .45 ACP shot shells by cutting down and turning a few pieces of 30-06 brass....<><....:)

45acp shot shells?  Interesting.

I'd really like to have a 45acp and a 9mm barrel.  I have some barrel blanks around, maybe I'll find a shotgun barrel or two cheap enough and start there.  One could shoot a long time for a little money on a value pack of 9mm.  May not be the biggest badest round in town, but I'm sure it would kill most chicken coop predators as dead as they need to be. Modern handgun ammo has hollow points that actually work and I think that a foot and a half of barrel would do wonders.

Not trying to start the whole 9mm vs 45 thing going, I want both.
