B.C. Short range report.

After picking up my B.C. on 1 April (an omen?), I finally got to shoot it today. I put 20 rounds of 300gn Federal and 20 rounds of my 405gn/Trailboss handloads down the 50 metre range. I soon got the windage right , but even with the rear sight as far up as it can go, I was still about 4 inches low with both loads. Groups were 2-3 inches, and I was happy with that. Would the Williams target sight give me the extra elevation, or would I need a lower front sight ? - Pete

I would try a lower front sight first, or you could simply file down the one you have.Just take it slow and shoot the rifle often as you go .   You don't want to take off too much.

I to need short range sight,only 100yrd. ranges around here.thinking of ordering Williams WMS FP-H&R W/TARGET KNOBS.Also have heard front sight is very differcult to replace do to some being "glued" in place?

I've had better luck with the post insert for the front sight.
I remember seeing a different set of inserts somewhere that i wanted to order, and I  also want to put a smaller apperature in the rear.

With the post insert, I was about 2 1/2 inches low at the 25 yard range with handloaded 405gr cast and Varget.

2-3 inch groups at 50 yards!?!?!  Before you do anything to that rifle I'd try some different ammo.  A different brand of ammo may shoot higher and tighter groups than that.  I've read about these rifles and you should be able to get those groups easily at 100 from what I've read.  Those are supposed to be really good shooters.

A LOT of BCs shoot low, the problem is H&R puts the wrong front sight on them, the .584" 17a Lyman sight is too tall, if you're seriously considering shooting long range, buy a .404" 17a sight for it, mine hits 1½" high at 100yds with the FP-TK sight bottomed shooting at trapdoor 405gr velocities. Bernie has used his for 400-600yd shooting 500gr at 1500fps. If you want to use the WGRS sight or aren't interested in shooting long range, get a .494" 17A or you could have H&R replace the .584". Another option would be to upgrade to a better sight, maybe one with a spirit level.  Removing the front sight is covered in the FAQs.

Way to go TIM!!!!!  I was just about to suggest a check of the front sight FIRST......( I learned that from Tim also I should mention ;D)

Thanks for the replies. Would the Williams FP with target knobs work with the standard front sight if you only require 100-200 yards ? - Pete

Depends on which sight you have, .494" yes, .584" probably not depending on the load, the FP-TK is the sight with knobs, TK = target knob.
