youth 22/410 nickel?
« on: January 27, 2009, 02:18:07 PM »
Just noticed this last night, is it any good for a 9 year olds first, 410 sounds interesting. After reading some of this forum you guys are scaring me off a little. All along I was figuring on a marlin 915 in pink camo.  The combo of two barrels for a little less money sounds good, but I am guessing the marlin would be better quality? Last night she saw a you-tube video of the Beretta guy shooting clay pigeons and was excited. I thought the 410 might be good for some hand tossed ones.

I got the .410/.22lr combo for my daughter so that we could plink and squirrel hunt together.

Two things to keep in mind; 1. .410s are difficult to hit any moving target with because of their small shot charge and usually tight chokes.  2. That dang thing only weighs about 4lbs and has a pretty mean little kick to it.  Surprised me the first time I shot it and I normally shoot a 12ga. Mossy pump.

The combos are nice and the quality is quite good for the money.  If I had to do it over again I would look for a 20ga. combo.  The 20ga is a better choice for birds (clay or the feathered kind) as well as for small furry critters and I don't think that the kick would be much worse.

A 4 pound 20 ga. will kick the snot out of a little kid. Try shooting it your self before you let the kid shoot it.

I think the .410/22 combo is on a different frame than the 20/22 combo is.  A 20 gauge will be too much in a light gun like the Rossi.  A youth .410 H&R is $117.00 at the local walmart in AZ.  How about a Youth H&R .410 and a Cricket .22, you should be able to get into both of those for about $250.00.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

I got my son one when he started shooting with me. He finally broke it 4 years and hundreds of thousands of rounds later. A friend of mine is fixing it as I write this. Turns out it was a broken return spring, so it was a cheap fix.

I'm definately not dissapointed with it. The 410 does kick a little, and ain't much good for anything moving fast or far away. But it did him good for squirrels...
