Shikari Range Report
« on: January 27, 2009, 10:49:17 AM »
I got out today despite the cold (25F) and snow (8 inches at the range) to shoot my "new" 25 year old Shikari 45-70.  The sun was out and there was no wind so all in all it wasn't at all bad.  In fact, it was wonderful. ;D

The attached target is from 50 yards. Its a start and OK so far using the iron sights the rifle came with.

I was using Starline brass and 63.2 grains of Swiss FF, a .030 milk carton wad, a large rifle primer (CCI this time) and a self cast 405 grain bullet (soft) lubed with SPG and sized at .458.  Slight crimp and set to an overall length of 2.60".

This rifle is a dream.  I have very high hopes for it as time goes forward but right out of the box so to speak and I'm very pleased.  The trigger could use just a tiny bit of touch up but other than that the only thing I might need to do is install my 1874 Buffington Rear sight (and I'm really not so sure about this :D as the factory iron sights are OK......so far... ;D).

Stupid me.....this is four shots out of four shots shot with a clean barrel just at the end of my shooting session.  This rifle (I think) really loves this load and the rest will of course be "up to me" to get it in tighter and at longer distance.  But, all in all not a bad start for the 'old girl'.

You might try the Lee 450 when you get a chance. It and the Lee 405 HB work very well in my Shikari. The 450's nose acts as a "bore rider", so smear some lube on it.

Jon....its the Lyman 457193.  "smokinjoe".....I'll look into the Lee 450......thanks "spanky".....:

I had heard a lot about these rifles and it was all good.  I'm pleased that I found one in "new or like new" condition.  I, may have paid a bit high $$$ for it but then again, I couldn't find one except at an auction on line and if it works out to be my "go to gun" for long distance and BIG critters then its money well spent.....until the wife finds out this is two rifles bought in four weeks ::) ;D ::) ;D ::)

I'm puting all black synthetic stocks on the Handis and keeping them moving around.  Confuses the wife quite well.  When a new one lands, it just jumps in with the others.  I'll probably suffer for this sneaky behavior later, but just now, I'm enjoying my Handis.
