Do I need to throat my Handi?
« on: January 27, 2009, 09:19:01 AM »
Was justing reading the sticky on throating a 45/70. I only shoot lead bullets in mine. Either 405, 500 or 535 Postell. Not sure if throating is necessary in mine. With the 535gr one's I seat them to were the bullet is touching the rifling. Use both blackpowder and smokeless in them. Do the same for my 1874 Sharps.

If the 535's seat where you want them too, then don't worry about throating.

If you needed more space for black powder you could obtain it by throating and seating the bullet out.  You can get 10 to 15 grs. more powder, similar to having a 45/90. Some 1000 yd. competitor do that.
