45-120 Reamer here!
« on: January 27, 2009, 06:12:01 AM »
It was waiting for me when I got home last night!  What service!  :o  I checked them, reamer and throater, out and will start the reamers a turnin' soons I work up the nerve!   ;D

One thing though, I don't see how I can easily fabricate an extension for the throater so I can use it on the 45-120.  The only thing I can think of is to drill a hole in the end of a piece of round stock then drill and tap a hole for a set screw.  Hummm, maybe if I use aluminum stock it is doable...  :-\  Wish I had a lathe...

I may just throat the 45/70...  ::)

Oh well, it's all good!!!   ;) :D

"Man-up" and stick that thing in there and start twisting!!!  ::) ::)

Its not a big deal, go slow and easy and you'll have a 45-120 in no time FLAT!!

Watch it now... this is a family forum!   ;) :D

But, I'm da man!  I'm da man!!  ;D  Gotta go to Lowe's tonight and get some stuff, then clean up my workbench, then show Kathie how to work the camera so she can record this for posterity, then I'll be ready to start...  :-\  think I'll refresh my supply of shim material at the same time.   :P

Hey Joe!  actually the extension fabrication bit was aimed at you!   ;D  I hoped you'd respond!   ;)  The throater shank is 1/4 inch, but it's not square.  It's round with one flat.  That's why I was thinking about drilling a piece of round stock.   :-\

I had assumed it would be a quarter inch square shank then I could use a quarter inch drill extension.  But no luck.   :(

I think I'd take the throater down to Lowe's and make them earn their money looking for a solution.

You got to understand Joe, the boy's biggest regret in life is that he hasn't detached a retina... YET!   :D

make them earn their money looking for a solution.

I hadn't thought of that...  :-\  I'll do it!  Hi-ebber, and day always be a hi-ebber, I've never been real impressed with the knowledge level of the employees in these type stores.   ;)

I'll look at the picture.  You can type faster then I can!

The trouble with taking it to Lowes. is that the average salesperson knows less than you........good luck :D

Richard, when you shoot that thing, face your rear end to the north.  You just may land in my yard and I'd like to see it ;D ;D  I'll be glad to help out with the shims.

Good luck, you old masochist

Might want to put a little duct tape on that beret, too! :D

By the way, I think a drill bit extension might work.

Rich,
Maybe a "paddle bit" extention would work for you. You know what a "paddle bit" is, right? Well they make an extension to fit the 1/4" shank!! If its strong enough, I'm pretty sure it would fit!!!

I fished around in my rare and obsolete ammo drawer...  Here is a pic of a old Balloon head 45Colt, next to an equilly old 45/70. Next to a very old 45/90 next to a newer, full length 45 basic case and a 500 lead slug...

Well, I wandered around Lowe's for a while last night.  Place was almost deserted!  The also didn't have anything I could use for an extension.   :(

Called Sears today after checking out their stuff on line and they have a 6 inch drill bit extension that looks like just the ticket!   :o  Ima gonna pick it up on the way home tonight!   ;D

Rich,
Did you ask for that paddle bit extinction? I have seen it @ the Depot many times.. Cannot remember the manufacturer.. But think it was plastered to a Blue and Yellow card. It was on the Wall near those bits...

I'll see if I can find mine and measure for you, But I'm positive it will fit a 1/4 because my 12V hammer driver will accept them and its 1/4".

Seems like one of these could work with some modification. If you lived a bit closer to the former capital of Dixie instead of the Peach capital I could make something in a hurry! Good Luck!

You guys are sooooo fortunate.  You have Lowes, Menards, Sears, Home Depot, etc right around the corner.  I thank God every day I don't.  If they're anywhere, there's a market.  If there's a market, there's lots of people.  I have no Lowes, etc., but I really enjoy having no people around me.  I really don't mind driving a couple of hours to get to them if I have too.  Just call me "Antisocial Pete."

That first link is what I am talking about!!!!!

That looks like what I picked up tonight except it's packaged as a "Craftsman" drill extension.  It's a 6 inch extension for quarter inch bits and has 2 set screws.  The only thing I found wrong is that the wide part that takes the bit measures .540.  I may have to grind it down to a smaller diameter depending on how far it has to go into the 45/120 chamber to reach the lands.   :-\  What the heck, it's all fun!   ;D

Chuck it up in the drill press and apply a file to it!! Be sure to occasionally "knock" the file to keep it clean. ;D
