Do these rifles work ok are they accurate ? How far could one reasonably expect to hit a coyote with a .222 ?

Yes,these are very accurate rifles. Most of the 222's are very accurate. You can hit a coyote at 200 to 300 yards, but after 250 yards will it kill or just wound it. I use 50 gr Hornady SX bullets in mine but try to keep my shots under 250 yards. I have killed animals at 300+ yards with mine but the bullet starts to drop off & clean kills are iffy.

Well it looks like I'm going to end up with one. Now could anyone help me find a scope base for one ? I think they screw into the reciever on the side ?

Mine is a very early Savage 340 with no S/N. Mine has a Weaver side mount, which limits the size scope you can install. When I bought my 340 used ( $ 25 ) in the 60's I put on a cheap 4x ( all I could afford at the time ). That didn't work for me. So then I found a nice used 3x9 Redfield at a good price. This stayed on for a couple of years. Now for the past 30 years it has a 6x Leupold on top. This is the prefect scope for this gun. I regret I don't shoot this gun much any more because I have so many other guns that I use. When this was my only gun I shot everything from squirrels to deer. Anything that was in range didn't have a chance. This gun put alot of venison in the freezer over the years.
I hope you reload because this is where this old gun really comes to life.
Just looked on Midway and B-square makes a mount that takes regular rings but is is alot more money than the Weaver.
GOOD LUCK with your 340.

This is the B-Square base I have on my 340:

It mounts on the left side and arches over the receiver to position the scope in line with the bore and has sufficient height to allow the irons to still be used.  Keep the base and throw away the weaver-style rings that come with it.
