Hunting Wild Hogs With A Handi

Is a 357 magnum enough to get the job done or would you go with a 30-30?

I think a well place shot will do the trick,I will be out there next week with my 38-55 Hog Hunting in N.C.

With a well placed shot the 357 mag will do just fine for hogs.

I shoot a lot of hogs, 20+ a year.  The 357, especially with the Honaday Lever loution rounds are just about the perfect hog pill.  Light and easy to carry with no recoil makes the Handi a near perfect platform.  I suggest adding a good holosight like the Bushnell or EOTECH.  Them critters can move fast when they need too.

Shot placement is the key , put it in the wrong spot and the 45/70 is not enough , put it in the right place and the 357 will do very well . and remember they can run FAST , both away from you and at you .

I would use the 45 70 on these down here in OK.The 357 would work great on neck shots,but I'm not so sure about any where else. Those 300 pd. and up one's are hard to kill sometimes.I've shot 3 with my 45 70 and none of them went down right there,but they were all over 300 pds. ( one was about 450).Just don't follow a wounded hog into a thicket by yourself,have someone with you that you can trust not to run on you.   Digger

  Between the two, I'd pick the .30-30.

  Here in Fla. I've seen a few hogs top 200 lbs. A hard cast .357 would be OK but you better pick your shot.

I hbave killed hogs with the 357 magnum and maximum but of the two cartridges you mentioned, i prefer the 30-30 with a 180 grain round nose bullet. It may not be fast but like the 45/70, that slow heavy bullet will put a hurtin on a hog real quick like,

   The 357 will work if you can get get bullet placement. The 30-30 would be better with a good 170 gr. bullet. That being said I use a Handi in 500 S&W, with 410 gr. hard cast. ;)

The .357 will work fine.  I put 'em down with a .223.  But heed Stimpy's warning.  With hogs it's all about location, location, location.  Also, I always carry a pistol with me just in case they get to me before I can reload.

It also has a lot to do with how you hunt hogs. If you hunt them over bait you can usually get that good shot. If however, you're walking thickets and sloughs (like we do), you normally don't have time for that perfect shot. That's when bigger gets better.

Thats the BEST part!  Having 4 or 5 hog charging out of a cane thicket headed straight towards you with dogs hot on there trail. :)

I've killed several with a 30-30 all of them hit the ground where they stood.  I even killed one with a shot behind the shoulder with a 22 mag.  It ran about 100 yards.  Hogs aren't that hard to kill.  However, I do prefer a repeater since they can become hostile in tight situations although I have never been charged.  I have seen what they can do to dogs and people when they can't get away.

 All things considered, many consider a 357 mag in a long barrel and the 30-30 are very close in on game performance. I tend to agree, the 30-30 has the edge in velocity while the 357 has a larger dia bullet... So with good shot placement as most others have already mentioned, I also think it will do what your asking.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
