How do I go about locating a TLA #5?
« on: January 24, 2009, 10:06:31 AM »
I was looking at having a #5 made by Bill Grover about 15 years ago, but couldn't afford the $1200.00 price at the time.  Now I wish I had gone ahead and splurged.  What is the best way to locate a #5, or other TLA guns for that matter.  I have only seen 2 listed for sale in the last few years, usually on GunList.  Any suggestions?  What would I expect to pay for a #5 in exc.  condition?

No clue on pricing but perhaps some of the folks here who own them can help. I'd look on all the gun auction sites regularly and you might try a Google search for them as well. I'd do it at least weekly until you find what you want.

Good advice above. I believe they are going for around $2000 or so these days. I gave $985 when I bought mine new from Mr. Grover in 1994.

If you want any TLA gun right now, you just have to beat the bushes and watch the online auction/sales sights.  Number Fives show up more frequently than any other model, presumably because far more were made than any other model.  If you can get a TLA gun for less than $2K, you are doing well.  I've seen them fetch over $3K if there was mad bidding going on.  They seem to settle between $2K and $2.5K if the seller knows what he has.

I just bought one last night on Gunbroker.  I found it less than 2 hours after it was listed and it had a Buy It Now that I couldn't resist.  This will be my third #5 and the only one I've seen in .44 Special.

Network with the guys who own them.  As I am sure that cubrock will testify to the fact that a lot of them have buyers lined up long before they are even for sale...

I dunno, Boge.  You would have had to have found it sooner than 2 hours after it posted.   ;D

I need to send you my Keith .41 Mag mold so you can see how that bullet will do out of your Flat Top Target when I eventually get it from you.   ;D

You guys are finally making this little idea of mine for this forum take off. It got off to such a slow start I was really beginning to wonder if it was worthwhile keeping around. I reckon so. ;D

I think it has just taken awhile for the folks who own them and have an interest in them to find this forum and begin to use it. So long as several of you who have an active interest in them continue to post about them here it should do well.

That can be arranged.  Not sure I have a sizer for .41, so you might just get them as cast.   ;)
