Just wondering what everyone uses to sight in handi rifles.  Do you use the two piece bags, a rifle rest, bull bags, gun vise or bipods.   I have used shooting sticks but the result was not very accurate.  What type is best for break action rifles?  Are some more solid than others?

I stand on my own two legs and shoot offhand - like a real man!  Braw ha ha ha ...  ;D

Usually use sand bags, sometimes a bipod.  Depends upon gun and circumstances.  Keep front support close to hinge pin.

I used to use the hood of my truck with a coat thrown across it for a rest.  Now I use a Caldwell Lead Sled.  It has made a world of difference.   They're fairly expensive, but very well built and stable.  For Handi's make sure you rest the rifle on it's frame - not the forearm of the stock.

I used to use a Premier rest, but switched to a Caldwell LeadSled DFT, break barrels will usually shoot best with the front rest just ahead of the trigger guard unless the forend is fully bedded.

The Lead Sled looks great.  I might have to pick one up.

Tim,
I'm  assuming that's your "collection" in the background??
I've seen gun stores with less selection!

thanks for the responses and the pictures. I have been thinking that the lead sled is the way to go.  It just seems alittle pricey.

I too use a lead sled for sighting in.  I use shooting sticks for making shots in the field.  I tried bi-pods and found they did not work that well.

I always shoot a harris bi-pod in the front with a sand bad in the back. This seems to give me my best accuracy.

The lead sled is a nice way to go for sure!!!  :'(  :'( I'm jealous for sure!!

I use "sand" bags of my own making. I cut the legs off old worn out dungarees. I have the wife turn inside out and sew-up one end. I fill almost full with kitty litter and have her finish sewing the other end.  They work great, are WAY cheap and not nearly as heavy as true sand bags.

 Good luck shooting!!

I made some light wieght bags out of some heavy socks, I took some bags of rice, I think 2lb bags, and sewed them into the sock still in the plastic. Works pretty well and they fit in my range box......Sometimes. ;D

I run a couple set of bags at the range .  One is lead loaded front and rear , the other is sand loaded front and rear...  I havent used my Harris on any of my Handis ( Yet ;)  )

In the field i use a walking stick as a platform to steady and rest the forearm on the top of my off hand , It still has a little nub of a former branch that serves for sitting holds ... Works real well for me ... Havent tried the flimsy looking stooting stick they sell at wally world that collapses  or the cross sticks ... The walking stick serves as a walking stick and not just another thing im carrying for my health  ;D

Unfortunately, not even in the same hemisphere as Tim's setup, but it
works for me. I use a cheapo Caldwell front rest.

And some scraps of wood (small pieces of 2X4 & 4X4) covered with carpet and some old shot bags filled with sand for the rear rest. Believe it or not it is pretty darn stable. I have got many sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards with this setup with
my rifles. I dial the elevation in with the front rest and use different thicknesses
of the carpeted wood with a sand filled shot bag on top of it for stabilizing and elevating and lowering the back of the rifle off of the bench. One of these days I will get a better front rest. Maybe a Stoney Point one like this.

I have owned those filled bags and have found them to be a complete pain in the
rear end to lug around and shoot with. Maybe they have worked well for others,
but they didn't work out for me.

Being frugal (others may say "cheap"), I took a piece of 2x8 about 16" long and cut a v-notch in the middle about 4" deep.  I then screwed this to a chunk of 1x8 for a base.  This I place on the shooting bench.  I lay my coat or whatever I have for padding on the "v" and place the rifle's forearm on this.  The butt is against my shoulder.  It may not be high tech, but it keeps the gun steady enough to get decent groups for sighting in.

I shoot off my back porch railing.
Take a kitchen chair out to the porch, put a towel over the railing and fire away.

Jealous! Jealous! Jealous!

How sweet that must be! I could see it now, provided it is legal to do where
you live, and all state fish and game laws are followed: It's 6:00 A.M. on a
Saturday morning and you are trying to get some sleep.  However a bunch of crows have decided to land in a tree 75-100 yards from your house and start making more noise than a bunch of skeletons having an orgy on a tin roof and wake you up from a deep restful sleep! You say to yourself, "That does it!" You crack your bed room window, hang your favorite H&R varmint rifle out and
put one of those squawk boxes in the crosshairs and squeeze off a round. He explodes into a cloud of black feathers and pink mist! All is silent now. His buddies get the message and exit stage left in a hell of a hurry. They know
if they stick around they will get more of the same. None of your "neighbors"
will complain, because they live so far away from you, they wouldn't have even
heard that shot anyway. You climb back in bed and doze off again thinking that those crows messed with the wrong guy today!

I also have a Caldwell DFT Lead Sled - just like the one Tim has. I use it for the heavy hitters, but I use a bags for the lighter stuff. A combination of home made sand bags (jean legs) and leather bags front and back. BTW I use the home made sand bags in the lead sled.

I made mine over 20 years ago from old blue jean legs filled with sand (fine gravel ) from a local bank that's now a condo-park (otherwise known, along with strip malls as "Suburban Blight".)

Lead sleds look like good aids to sight in. I've seen some nice ones guys have made from auto scissor jacks.
Might try that myself.

i  have sand  bags  but always forget to take them

so  i  mostly use  the folded  up gun case

sometimes  unzip  one case completely  for  a mat
then  fold a second  case to desired hight

I use a gunsite vice I got at Wally World for about $20 ,it seems to work pretty well.I set it on the roof of my truck and stand in the bed of it. It's cheap but does the job.
