How many shots for barell break in on a .308 Bull?
« on: January 23, 2009, 08:16:48 AM »
Went to the range today and put a box through my new .308 barell.  At 50 yards, it made an approx. 1.5 inch hole in the paper after 20 shots.  Does anyone have experience with about how many shots it will take to get the barrel broken in.  So far I am very pleased. :)

I am going to clean and take it back to the range on Monday. :)
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie roll center..... one....two....three......

It all depends on your barrel and the condition of the rifling.  A lot of my rifles will get 50-100 rounds fired in them before I start to work up reloads with my once fired brass.  Running a few tight patches down the barrel will give you a clue as to how it is smoothing out.

I know what you mean, but its def not "fake".  Look at it this way. A manufacturer manufactures countless barrels at a time. Tools dull the first barrels with a new tool will have a much smoother, more consistant cut. IE will not need as much "break-in". One that's cut near the end of that broaches life will be rough if not choppy. That barrel will need extra finesse to get it into top shape. We as a consumer would hope for consistant results, but this is the real world and we are talking about $250 dollar guns here, not $10,000 Dakota rifles.

I have three custom CF bolt guns. All wear Shillen match barrels, all shot sub MOA with the first shots thru the tube. I have probably owned 10-12 brandy new CF rifles. NONE have been that good out of the box. One Remington ADL 30-06 was really really good, but not up to the customs. I would not really expect that hey are. Each of those barrels cost more than that Rem ADL did new. My point is, I paid top dollar to get a choice barrel, that not the case with the handis. (AND most commercially available firearms today.) That's part of what I mean when I say each firearm is its own identity and no two are alike.

Steve P. said it best... How many licks DOES it take... The world may NEVER know..... :o ;D ;D ;) (Mostly cause its NEVER the same!!  ;) )

I didn't see a smiley.  Is this a joke?

I have many cheapy rifles that cost me $200-300-400-500.  I did not take time to break them in.  Although I really should have.  They will shoot minute of angle and will kill anything I would hunt with them.

I have several competition handguns with barrels made by Shilen and Hart.  I broke these in very carefully.  With my handloads, on a good day, I can shoot 1" groups at 200 meters.  There are lots of days that I miss tiny targets, but I cannot blame it on the gun.

Barrel break-in is definitely not fake.

If you say so. when I hear people talk about barrel break in they think they have to shoot 100 times for the barrel to shoot well. To me that's not true either you got a good barrel or not.
