45/120 reamer on the way!
« on: January 22, 2009, 10:18:08 AM »
Just got off the phone with Fred at 4D Products; a GREAT GBO Sponsor BTW.   ;)  We spent a goodly amount of time on the phone discussing what I want to do.  We talked about reaming, we talked about throating, he told me what to do and the best way to do it.  I tell ya, the guy's the best.   :-*

Anyway, he's boxing up the reamer and throater as we speak.  I have my project for next week all lined up!   :P

Heck Tim, I was committed, or should have been, when I spent all that money for a hundred pieces of brass for a rifle I didn't have!   :o ;D

You guy's gotta stop all this 45-120 talk.
Both of my 45-70 barrels are running scared of the "Grim Reamer" ;)
I keep tellin' 'em that it's just a myth, but I can't lie to 'em forever. ;D

Come on now Spanky.......sooner or later you're gonna have to sacrifise one of them to the 45-120 Gods..............Are you sure its the barrels running from the Grim Reamer and not your shoulder running runningfrom the recoil. ;D

Change your tactic!  Take a hint from those TV commercials!  Tell those barrels to "take this!  Proven to make you bigger and improve your performance!"   ;D

Just shoot em standing at first.  Then at the bench make sure you don't lean into it.  Proper technique will relieve alot of the felt recoil.  Just turns it into a strong shove.  At least thats what I kept telling my black and yellow shoulder. ;D  My dad had a 45-100 Sharps and at 12 or 13 pounds had to switch to a 38-55 built on a Browning single shot action.  He said the recoil was too much for a day of comp.  He never got to enjoy the 38-55 tho.

Just shoot em standing at first.

It'll be a while before I shoot it Jerry.  Gotta get another receiver and fit the barrel to it; I done grown to agree with Tim and them about a receiver for each barrel.  Then I got to cut down the stock I'm gonna use.  The factory 14.5 LOP is an inch and a quarter to long for me.  Gonna refinsh it to.  'corse I got to get some dies so I can load rounds...   :-\

Who am I kidding!   :P  I'll be shooting that thing before the reamer gets back to Fred at 4D!   ;D  Nothing to hot though... I figger I'll start with a 405 @ 2150.   ;)  Now all I got to do is find me a 'possum...  ::)

Opposum,...I think you might need a bigger bullet for those critters.  Maybe the 500 or 525's.  Tys ran about 75 yds after he shot it.  ::)

Ok I set you up, now you may finish....

Since I have two BCs, (had three until Richard took one of the barrels off my hands), with all the talk you guys are doing about the cost of componets and all for the 120 I think I might only go as far as 100 for right now as I already have brass for that.
Or I may just leave as is and make it a dedicated 45-70 BP gun.
Just can't decide!

Well, anyone still on the fence about reaming to 45-120 missed a great buy on Norma 45-120 headstamped brass, it was $63 per 50 on sale, it's still on sale, but for $90 per 50!!   :(

:D  Sorry Jerry, I'm to busy laughing!   ;D

I'll save that straight line for a description of my first hunting expedition with the rifle.  I'll pick one of our more dangerous critters, say... a chipymonk!   8)  Them's downright fractious!  Why, during the yankee invasion just one of our stars and bars lovin little fellers held off a whole regiment of yankee cavalry durin the battle of Kennesaw Mountain!  Now picture this little striped feller runnin up and down that line of cavalry, nipping fetlocks, horses buckin, bluebellies flying every which a way!  Ah what a sight that musta been!  Now THERE is a worthy quarry for any buf-ler gun!   ;D

WELL NOW, looks like I made a mistake!
Tims comment about missing a deal made me stop and think.
I bought that brass when he first said it was on sale.
Guess what-it IS 120 brass!
So much for the 100 idea.

I knew my eyes were going but didn't know my mind was riding with them! :D

I have one but the only thing I can't figure out is how to keep it to my shoulder while I mount the gun in a in the field-standing position! :P

Hey Charlie ,..I was afraid of big guns ever since a 243 made me want to stop hunting.  I was mid 20's, and couldn't fit into that winchester for what ever reason.  I had a small gap between recoil pad and my shoulder, and I kept that up until I realized what was goin on.  I was also leaning way into the gun trying to hang onto it like it was some African express rifle...
Later I finally started buying guys of my own and went from 270 to 7mm to 300mag to 338 RUM to 45-70 to 45-100 then finally to 45-120.  Finally realizing alot about recoil,or the fear of recoil, was in my head.  Its there for sure the energy levels tell you that.  Then I read a book by I think his name is Aurthor Douglas"High power rifle accuracy before you shoot" or something like that and it showed how to sit, not hunch over the stock, at the bench.  Nearly upright, mind you.  Means the table has to be high or your seat low.  Kind of like firing standing except rifle is fully supported by bench and bags.  Also be relaxed so as to sway with the recoil rather that fight it.  I'm only 5'9" and 180 and can spend alot more time shooting the bigs ones now because of this.  Of course the lead sled would help at the bench too.

Chipymonks...LOL...id cost me $100 dollars a pop here in PA for those dangerous tusked critters.  So dangerous they're protected from trophy hunters. ;D ;D ;D

Depends how fast you can jump. And how far the elevator has fallen from.  It would lessen the impact but I don't think by enough.  Have to be a high enough elevator so as not to hit your head when you do jump. :P

When you head out to the woods with a 45-120, do the deer just give up and go hop in the back of the pick-up??

One good use for that does come to mind.  This year I had a nice buck behind some trees that never would show himself for a shot with my 243.  With AtlLaws 45-120, I could shoot him THROUGH the tree!  ::)

Yes I think that might do it.  And still hit it with the force of a 243.
