22-250 accuracy
« on: January 21, 2009, 02:04:15 PM »
I am thinking about going down this handi road again. Me and my buddie both bought 243 handis. We tried time after time to get these things to shoot but never could. We finally sold them disgusted that these things wouldn't group. I am a farmer and the thought of a cheap gun to carry around in the truck for groundhogs, yotes and cattle chasing dogs was and still is a great idea. My question to you handi holics is what are the odds that I'll get a good nef 22-250 right out of the box. Don't get defensive, I just want yaws thoughts.

                                                  Sincerely future handi holic?

i know of 5  ultra-varmint  22-250 (sb2-8t5) bull barrel models in my area.
and all are very accurate shooters, one of which is mine...
not to be confused with an ultra-light.
we take coyote beyond 250 yrds with clean kills.
make a bull barrel handi your next choice,  thats my opinion.
good luck

I have the basic standard weight barrel NEF.  Mine, strait out of the box, except for a shim on the forearm lug, shot sub 5/8” groups at 100 yards.  I did notice a little “Walk” when the barrel started getting warm.  My stock trigger pull was horrible (7+ pounds!), and I hate the over travel.  I just finished lightening my trigger pull and polishing the internals, so I might be able to tighten up the group a little bit.

Hilbillysmoke,
Welcome back! It shouldn't be too tough to get that 22-250 shooting good.
Look through the FAQ's about the forend and the trigger. If you bed your
forend with RTV and do the trigger job you are only talking about a few
bucks for a tube of RTV and a stone for the trigger job. It only takes a
couple of nights to to do the work and the results will amaze you! This
along with keeping the latch free of any oil will make that 22-250 a
varmint destroyer! What kind of scope are you looking to put on it?

If you reload for it, be sure to keep an eye on the overall length of the empty case.  After around 3 reloads they get to long and the action will not close.

Some of the early 22 250's didn't shoot that well,( terrible) and they sold them on Ebay. Mine started out shooting very well ( 1/2" groups with handloads but alot of flyers with factory) then the barrel shot so loose that it started misfires. It has one of the soft lugs that a few have had on there's.I never got around to sending it back, and its laying in my gun room somewhere now.Mine is the fluted barrel and it was shooting better than any Handi I've ever owned.I think for your situation,I would get the 223.  Digger
