Browning 1886 Carbine Saddle Ring

Had always wanted a Browning 1886 as the new Winchesters have the safety and rebounding hammer  :( .   At a show this weekend a gentleman walked in with a carbine to trade on a over-under shotgun.  He didn't trade so I got the 1886 for $600  :-D .  No box or papers but very nice at 98%+ (due to one scatch on forearm and 2 very small scratches on receiver.
I don't know if I commited a sin  :twisted: but the first thing I did was to remove the saddle ring from it's mount and put it away  :shock: .  I didn't like it flopping around and eventually marking the receiver.  Do most of you that have 1886 carbines leave the ring on or take it off  :? ?

Sounds like a good buy.  I remove the ring and store it.  Much quieter that way....

It's much harder to find anything saddle ring that has the ring still on, so a lot of these were "put away" never to be seen again. Have you considered tying a short leather lace on the ring to keep it from making noise, and protect the receiver?

The leather lace is OK, but most I've seen rust badly underneath it.  Don't know if you can oil it enough to keep it from drawing moisture totally.

:)  Many years ago when I acquired my first 1886 Winchester SRC all the guys laughed at the ring, saying that the noise of it would scare away the game. So, I removed it and put it in a box in the garage. A few years later I had a change of heart and the ring was put back where it belonged.That little gun has served me well for decades and hopefully will continue to do so as long as I am able to carry it. If it came with a ring, leave it. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I left the ring on mine and haven't noticed any positives or minuses. The wear on the receiver will become noticeable but that doesn't bother me. My 86 is a 'user', not a play pretty. Just out of curiosity, how did you plug the hole when you removed the ring stud?

I left the stud, just removed the ring by speading it (it is split) just enough get it off.
