Hodgdon LIL'GUN in '94AE Trapper .357 Mag.
« on: August 24, 2003, 01:36:01 PM »
Just picked up this gun as a plinker, and maybe a deer gun for Pa.

I've been trying out some loads using 158gr cast SWC, and 158gr Sierra JSP, and the Sierra 170gr JHC.

Looking through the loading manual for LIL'GUN info used with the 158gr jacketed, it seems as though they are getting pretty good speed (1577fps W/10"bbl), with comparable very low pressure (25800 CUP) compared to a max. load of H4227 (1520FPS @ 42600 CUP), or a max load of H110 (1591fps @ 40,700 CUP).

The load I tried (18gr LIL'GUN W/ 158gr) seemed to shoot the best (accuracy wise) out of all the loads I tried using Unique, Bluedot, and LIL'GUN with 158gr cast, and 158 & 170 Jacketed. With iron sights, I was getting just over 1" @ 50 yds.

Now my question is, is anyone else using LIL'GUN in their levergun loads? The speeds in the book are for 10" barrels, has anyone cronographed their LIL'GUN loads to see what speeds they are getting out of a rifle?

I use 16gr of Lilgun under our 180gr STCW bullet and this will do right at 1800fps out of the Marlin 94CP with 16.5" barrel! This is a great deer and hog load. We took several west texas hogs last november with this load!

John
Thanks for the info!
I like the looks of your 180's, as soon as I use up some of the 158's I have left over from another project, I'm going to order a few hundred to give a try. What is the max. speed you would recomend your 180's be pushed to. I have a 350 Rem. Mag. in a Rem, XP100R and I'd like to try some in it.

Bill,
With a properly sized hard cast bullet with good lube and a gas check they will take at least 2600fps as this is the speed I push 265gr hard cast bullets out of my wildcat 400 Yukon and I've been told by Kelly Brost over at Cast Performance that they have pushed bullets over 3000fps with no problem!

                                           Regards,
